R Whites Lemonade now use Aspartame.

For those of you who are interested.
I picked up a multipack of R Whites Lemonade cans and noticed that the calorie content looked quite low. So looked at the ingredients and there it said Aspartame.
I used to favour R Whites over Schweppes but now they are both as bad as eachother.
Like several non-diet drinks (Lilt, Tango, Fanta) they now use sweetener rather than sugar because it is cheaper than sugar and also so the calorific figure is lower. So people not aware of Aspartame are more likely to buy it rather than a higher calorie version. Please leave diet drinks as diet drinks and sugar based drink as such.
Note I don't drink loads of pop, so when I do I don't want artificial sweeteners.

I agree. Aspartame leaves an aftertaste and also has dubious qualities.0

Would have to agree also. I absolutely loath the taste of artificial sweeteners, and found myself in the same boat - fancied a sugary lemonade drink, and it was rank because of the sweeteners. Bluergh!0

Before the usual panic sets in this thread, the fears of Aspartame are all unproven. That said, I agree with the OP. Drinks companies should not be looking into putting it in their regular-range drinks, as many people will testify here that they taste horrible.
I do not generally fall in that crowd (I think the Tesco Value Apple & Blackcurrent is quite nice), however a few years ago Volvic Touch of Fruit changed from sugar to sweeteners, and that was the day I stopped buying it. Eventually they brought back the original range in addition to the sweetened one, but alas it was too late, as I am now a moneysaver
How come all of these big name brands put sweeteners in their regular lemonade, but I've yet to have a restaurant actually serve diet lemonade?0 -
According to Wikipedia, R Whites have been using Aspartame since 2006.
Shows how long since I've bought R Whites!
Morrison's do a nice Lemonade made with lemons, in their "The Best" range. About 70p for a 2 litre bottle......0 -
And they put sweeteners in low-fat food (e.g. yogurt). I appreciate that it keeps the calories down but some people may want the calories and not the fat, e.g. those with high cholesterol. I hate the taste of aspartame, bleeeeuuuuurrgh. But maybe it's one of those tastes that some people just can't distinguish. I've known loads of people who can't tell the difference."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

Sainsbury own brand stuff has no aspartame, inc diet lemonade which I find acceptable if mixed appropriately with spirits.
I can tell if I have had aspartame, or rather my joints can - I do suffer. Mr S has been a life saver (or joint saver lol).Ankh Morpork Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons - don't let my flame go out!0 -
What is all this about Aspartame, I've heard about it loads but when I've done some digging on the net there was no conclusive evidence that there are any problems with it..0

There isn't any conclusive evidence, lol. Generally it's along the lines of: In laboratory rats when given a ridiculously large dose of ...........................
The odd glass of diet (or indeed non-diet) drink is very unlikely to have any ill effect.
However I still wish to minimise the amount of the amount of artificial sweeteners I consume. Plus the taste of sweetener is not to my liking!
Sucralose is NOT made from sugar either! The got fined a lot of money for that blatant lie. The purposefully called it sucralose so that it was similar to sucrose! Devious eh?.....0 -

Ah, so I wasn't imagining things - I knew the Sainsbury's squashes used to say sucralose is sugar based. Was wondering why that line isn't on their double strength squashes at the moment.0 -

Have a look at this. It's very scathing, lol!
