It is thanks to drivers like you that we no longer take my horse out on the road - not because HE is dangerous and unpredictable, but because SOME other road users are ignorant idiots.

My horse was actually hit by a car (through no fault of the horse or rider) that came too fast and too close just because they could - what if it had been a child on bike, is it acceptable to scare the life out of them/ram them with your vehicle just because it might take you an extra 10 seconds to show them some courtesy?!

Unfortunately for you it is perfectly legal to ride a horse on the roads, so until that changes I think you should learn to show a little respect to your fellow road users. What if someone you know and love was killed in an accident due to a car driver with an attitude like yours? And what if you killed someone - would you be feeling so smug then?

I can't understand why people can't simply be courteous to others - I hate motorcyclists but don't go around knocking them flying at every opportunity just for kicks. I feel sorry for you that showing off in your car makes you feel better about yourself.

If people like me are stopping selfish horse riders from coming out then that's great news.

Fwiw i grew up on a farm, and i heard the horse riders then "ha ha we well had that guy waiting ages behind us - Im not moving for him when horses were here before cars" I've heard them all. Riding 2 horses wide and not even having the slightest care about the queue of cars behind you.

I don't care whether what i say annoys you or indeed what you think of my attitude because i can tell you for certain i'm thinking a lot worse when i see you out on the road trotting along like you own the place.

If you check your facts you'll find that Horses and Pedestrians have the RIGHT to use the Queen's Highways.
Anyone else (with the strange exception of cyclists) is required to be licensed, and that licence can be revoked.
So, if you, in your car, cannot learn to share the road with people who have more entitlement to be there than you, then you shouldn't be driving.

Animals. When passing animals, drive slowly. Give them plenty of room and be ready to stop. Do not scare animals by sounding your horn, revving your engine or accelerating rapidly once you have passed them. Look out for animals being led, driven or ridden on the road and take extra care. Keep your speed down at bends and on narrow country roads. If a road is blocked by a herd of animals, stop and switch off your engine until they have left the road. Watch out for animals on unfenced roads.

And it is a good job that the Police sorted out ones tyres!

They do not have more entitlement what a load of tosh. Paved roads were created for cars who's drivers pay a tax for their upkeep.

Horses whilst allowed on the road should be on bridle ways, it is better for the horse and better for the drivers.
But i wouldnt expect a selfish horse rider to care much about anything other than themselves.

Maybe it's time for some drivers to read the highway code again when it comes to horses.

My daughter was out on a lead rein on a young horse, on a quiet country road that led to a bridle path, she was an experienced rider, but young horses can be unpredictable. She was properly insured, I was wearing a high vis vest. and still the prat had to rev his engine and scare the living day lights out of the horse. Luckily she was experienced enough to calm the horse pretty quickly.

Now how the hell are young horses supposed to gain road experience with prats like you about?

  • just a thought , but i thought horse boxes were meant for transporting horses from a to b .
i.e from stables to a bridleway

  • izzy i respect and acknowledge your reply , but i still dont see why you need to take animals on the road.surely your respect for the animal would defer, or am i really thick ?

You are really thick :rotfl: sorry, but you did ask!

It's been explained why riders go on roads - to get to bridleways so they can exercise their horses. For me personally, I would FAR rather ride across miles of countryside than down a tarmac road anyday. Sadly, the bridleways are not joined together so you have to travel on the roads to reach them.

I ride in an arena to school/jump, there are fields for the horses to graze in. Are you now suggesting that horse riders just ride around their grazing paddocks rather than leaving the yards their horses are kept in? Or do you think we all have bridleways leading from our yards into the countryside???

And by the way, I have plenty of respect for horses and indeed all animals. They are a damn site better mannered than many people I come across in everyday life.

Yes, cos we can all afford to run a horse box as well as keep our horses. Meanwhile... back in the real world....

Besides, you'd probably then be complaining you were fed up of driving along stuck behind a bl00dy great horse box that was hogging the road and parked up on narrow country lanes:rotfl:

Anyway, when you get your own horse, you'll be able to explore all of these options for yourself! :D I look forward to your future posts on the matter. My OH doesn't ride horses, just motorbikes. He says never ride anything with a brain!

That's your responsibility. I am sorry your child got injured id never wish that on anyone.
But in my opinion it was your neglect that led to the accident. You took her out on the road riding an 'unpredictable horse' knowing full well there would be other road users.

It is ridiculous you try and shift the blame from yourself to another road user who revved his engine. Im glad you weren't my parent.
