why do horse owners think they own the road ?

I am scared of horses. they are animals and therefore unpredictable.
The horse rider is never 100% in control.
Any more than having a rat driving a powerful car or a lizard on a moped.
As a cyclist if one got startled when i went past it could kick me in the face.
With an uninsured horse there would be no payout for the damage to my face and bicycle.
The riders around here are always courteous but I have seen one get spooked and out of control before.
I know they have been around a long time but we live in a different culture these days where risk and accountability are taken more seriously.
If we allow horses on the roads then we should permit drink driving and talking on mobile phonessquaaaaaaaaacccckkkkkk!!!! :money:0 -
Nice to see that not all the posters on this thread are miserable so and so's who think that only cars should be allowed on the roads.
Now that a lot of the countryside has been taken for houses or roads where are people meant to ride? Also, as other posters have said, in order to get to the few bridleways etc most horse riders have to ride along a road first.
Stop being so bloody miserable. If it takes a few extra seconds on the road so what? Horse riders have as much right to be there as anyone else and I expect most of them wish there was some where else to ride other than a road full of inconsiderate selfish and dangerous drivers.The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -

It is not possible to despise horse riders more than i do. I live out in the country side and the roads are riddled with them.
It was only last week i had a 13 year old doing hand signals telling me to slow down or whatever. And they never thank you, you could drive at 1/2mph and 15 mile wide and you wouldn't get a single thank you.
As for them selfish bstards who ride 2 wide on a corner as though to say "yeah, wait for us" i just tear !!!! past them close and fast.
I can't believe how many horse riders are fat, it just goes to show what people horse riders can be, they don't care about cars on the road, don't care about their horses curling one out wherever they are yet probably whinge at dog owners who do the same and they don't care that their 20 stone fat !!!! is breaking the horses back.
In my opinion, there are millions of bridleways where i live, if your horse is too scared to walk on the road - get off the f'ing road then.
At least with a Horse when there shoes get worn down they are noticed and changed rapidly,unlike others who need to be told when there tread is getting too low and then bleat about it when they are fined and get points.
Youre attitude to other road users does not reflect what you said on your other thread about being a responsible driver.
Horses have right to be on the road the same way you and i do,i just thank god that the Sinclair C5 never took off what would you have said about them.Forum spellcheckers are the pitts.0 -
LOL!, this post made me chuckle.
I find horses on the road very irritating, and looking at the state of some of them they should be turned into glue without delay, HOWEVER I always go past them slowly and give them a wide berth

Im telling you mate, I drive the same route every day and when they see me coming they get out of the way, because if they don't they are getting an Audi A4 within an inch of them at 60mph.
The result of years of delays and frustration.
It is thanks to drivers like you that we no longer take my horse out on the road - not because HE is dangerous and unpredictable, but because SOME other road users are ignorant idiots.
My horse was actually hit by a car (through no fault of the horse or rider) that came too fast and too close just because they could - what if it had been a child on bike, is it acceptable to scare the life out of them/ram them with your vehicle just because it might take you an extra 10 seconds to show them some courtesy?!
Unfortunately for you it is perfectly legal to ride a horse on the roads, so until that changes I think you should learn to show a little respect to your fellow road users. What if someone you know and love was killed in an accident due to a car driver with an attitude like yours? And what if you killed someone - would you be feeling so smug then?
I can't understand why people can't simply be courteous to others - I hate motorcyclists but don't go around knocking them flying at every opportunity just for kicks. I live in a semi-rural area where we are surrounded by miles and miles of desterted county roads but I quite often see horses passing my house in the middle of a housing estate. They also seem to enjoy trundling up and down the busiest road in the village which is effectively a single lane road as there are always cars parked along one side of it. Why not make use of all the quiet back roads? I think they just want to show off.
And why isn't it law for horses to wear nappies in residential areas. The mess can be disgusting and I've never once seen a rider clean up their horse's deposits :mad:.The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water

Good point, as a dog owner I pick up my dogs turds every single time (with a bag I hasten to add) she takes a dump!

My gran (god rest her) used to make me go and collect the horse dung "for the roses" sooo embarassing.
I dont mind them as long as they are as courteous to me as I to them.
Its those b***dy lycra clad cyclists that get me going, I mean can I race my car or motorcycle on the road, can I travel above the safe stopping distance for my vehicle, can I have just a small led back light and no front light cause the bloke at the front has that....grrrrrrrrrrrrrr0
