dont get me going on this. i would love to be able to ride a horse , but I would want to ride it in a safe situation away from modern day traffic and in a situation that the horse would be comfortable with.
why put an animal through a situation that is not their norm ? (unless the horse is 100 years old and can remember the days before the motor car )
at least tractors are earning a living (another pet hate )
A lot of riders don't want to be on the road but have little option. There are far fewer bridleways than you might imagine and invariably to get to one you have to do the roadwork to get there.Despite the name, I'm actually a laydee!0 -
I agree totally OP.
4 of em on a road with chicanes (sic) on them today.
They didnt stop, move over - just carried on chatting.
Disgrace - they shold be ashamed and stick to the fields and paddocks0 -
You should have known this when you passed your driving test that you are not the only person allowed to use the road. What about bike riders, walkers, moped users the list is endless with people getting in the way of the road.
If you want to blame anyone blame the councils. Most horse riders would rather always stay off the dangerous roads, But to get to their bridal ways you have to go via dangerous roads. they always seem to put them there!
Most responsible horse riders have insurance, and most wouldn't take out a novice horse on the roads. But like car drivers there are always a few to tarnish the name!0 -
Ive not come across any horses that aren't comfortable being next to cars,0

Yes, and I was just commenting on his vent. That is allowed too."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0 -
if you have strong feelings for this , why put the animal through it ? your horse will never be needed in a road transport situation and is more likely to be "spooked " by modern day transport. take a life ticket and consider whether you want your animal to be nervous or A DANGER .we all have bad days , some more than others ..................0

Roads are not solely intended for cars, anyone who is capable of being on a road safely and showing respect and courtesy to others should be allowed to use it.
Most horse owners are responsible on the roads, as are most car drivers. It's a shame you feel such vitriol towards a group of people who have likely done little to you than delay your journey by a minute or two. Some horse riders are muppets on the road but unfortunately I have encountered more prattish behaviour from car drivers (unlike lorry drivers, who are largely fantastic with horses)
If you feel so strongly about it, please use your energy by supporting your local bridleway group so that the UK's bridleways can be a) maintained to a safe and appropriate state and b) extended.
As to the other poster, whilst it is true that some horses will always have a 'thing' about cars no matter what their experience, I have found that the majority of horses who are scared of traffic are so because of a previous near miss/actual collision
I'm not saying that its right that horses are being scared due to a near miss/collision, I just don't know why you would put a horse through that and take a risk? Most drivers are sensible and would slow down and give a horse plenty of room, but what about the idiots that don't? I have dogs and wouldn't walk them in the road, I know its not entirely the same, but I just don't trust some drivers out there!
I'm not having ago at horse people, I live in a village and I see lots of horse riders on the country roads and most drivers are very considerate. I also see alot of horses pulling them trailer things (don't know what there called!) on a 40 mph road and the horses look terrified having cars whizz past them.:heart2: Newborn Thread Member :heart2:

unless you own a toyota , then you should be more worried .................we all have bad days , some more than others ..................0

Horses on the road don't bother me to be honest. In fact the rider/walker has always acknowleged after I've slowed down etc to drive past them, something I cannot say about other drivers who just ignore you when you've helped them out. The only time it can be annoying is on the rare occassion I've seen them riding side by side, however it's usually cyclists that I see doing that rather than horses.0
