Man you guys are annoying me now!
gromituk...I've watched sports - even at Standard Sky+ SD defitinion it was wonderful. Hell, I even watched the Loreal adverts (because I'm worth it) - the skin tones seem perfect. By all means buy a Panasonic. Their eqivalent screen is £600-£700 quid more. A bit of perspective please.
anewman...it *is* high definition. For chrissake it's got 768 vertical lines...how many do you want? (it can handle 720p & even 1080i broadcasts). You don't have to have it fill (which incidentally on SD 'fill' looks *fantastic*), if you're that anal about hthis type of thing then it does 1:1 mapping vertically with some tiny black bars at top and bottom.
Tmurf - most sets released/bought to date can only display 720p or 1080i ...*only* the latest LCD coming out now have 1080p ability (& the larger plasmas) ...and they cost a whole lot more . You're statement "so you're not going to get full hi-def on this tv" is misleading - you most certainly *are* going to get it over HDMI or DVI!!
What a bunch of negative french connection UK'ers you are!
Basically I've researched LCD/Plasmas until I'm blue in the face over the past 6 months. I've seen every supposedly good offer come & go.....this TV rocks & most of the -ve comments on this thread are ill informed, poorly reseached, misleading or just darned brand snobbery.0 -
If you're thinking of buying - check out this link;

It's got pictures of the screen - and it seems that the general view on avforums is that it's a very nice looking plasma and performs well. They say that NicePC and/or their courier Echo can be a little slow at getting the orders through, but otherwise it's a great deal.
The box will come with a anti-shock detector - check it before you sign for delivery.

However, there's an awful lot of "emperor's new clothes" about these things. People seem to be happy with fairly awful pictures if they're big enough.
And many sets which are "HD ready" are seriously compromised when displaying standard definition pictures - i.e. the ones you view 99% of the time - because the upconversion electronics are not very good.
So this set really looks a lot better than most of the plasmas you've looked at?Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0 -

I totally agree with you. Especially the brand snobbery bit.
BUT!
Your idea of good might not be the same as my idea of good. So does anyone which shop has got this model on display so I can see the real thing with my eyes?
By the way just to double check... it does 1:1 pixel mapping via DVI or VGA or HDMI pc input yea? Because basically I want a plasma to use with my HTPC.
Thanks.0 -
cpjackso - re http://www.avforums.com/forums/showt...=360279&page=3 that's my review (peskywinnets) with pictures so please all bear that in mind - it's not another user - it's me! That said, there are a number of other owners on the thread so it's worth having a read.
Believe me when I say this guys...I've looked at soooo many screens & been either underwhelmed by...
1. The picture Quality.
2, The looks of the set.
3. The connectivity.
Sure you can get all...but at a top dollar price. This plasma has it all for £872.99 delivered!!!!
Re the Fujitsu-Siemens brand not being 'premium'. Well, define premium? I say it's the whole package - the quality of build, components used, support etc. I can't vouch for the internals, but the build quality is second to none & the support is excellent. As an example - how many manafacturers have a picture library with different angles & lighting for you to dowload? ( http://www.fsc-mediaserver.com/fsc-photoserver/index.cfm?fuseaction=list&CFID=34043&CFTOKEN=98224790&fid=5547 ) ...let's be clear Fujitsu Siemens are a massive company with the kind of backup facilities you would expect.
Also German design/engineering & Japanese electronics....what a combination?!!!
I had the same worries as some....a bit worrying ordering something 'unseen' - but (correct me if I'm wrong) you are protected under distance selling regulations & have 7 days to send it back? Even the Nice-PC website implies you can send stuff back with 7 days (it'll cost a bit though - it weighs 43kg!)0 -

A 42" plasma cannot do 1:1 pixel mapping as such as its pixels are 16:9 shaped. So to display a pc picture your pc needs to output 1024*768 which is a 4:3 aspect ratio and let the TV stretch it to 16:9. As its stretching the picture it can never really be described as 1:1 pixel mapped. Even outputting a 4:3 image would require some stretching.
As a side note I find it ironic that the OP mentions his dislike for brand snobbery but makes a point of emphasing that this plasma is a "top brand" by posting that in the thread title.0 -

But your failing to understand that this set is not made by the same department as fujitsus other plasmas so to quote they are a massive company is a misnomer. It may aswell be a completely different company. I wonder how many people reading this would be so tempted by it if it were made by an unheard of company like tevion because really it may as well be.
Dont get me wrong Im sure your happy with your set but its only fair to tempur your post a little by stating that this set may be decent but its still a budget set and that even though it has fujitsu in the brand name, it is a very very different plasma from those well respected ones made by fujitsu themseleves.0
