What no longer goes on YOUR shopping list?

There's some great tips on this thread, thanks. My measly contribution is that I no longer buy the pretty (and expensive) boxes of paper tissues - I've kept the nice boxes and just keep refilling them with value supermarket own brand ones, usually under 30p.0

I've just remembered - I don't buy cereal any more.0

Hi, i've heard a few people mention that they use white vinegar and water for cleaning, how much parts water to parts vinegar do you use please? TIA.0

I haven't taken anything off the shopping list, as most of the things you all mention weren't there in the first place.
I've always used carrier bags a liners for smaller bins, never put kitchen roll in the bottom of the bin (don't know why it would be needed)
Since they have been available I've bought the cheapest very thin sandwich bags, they are about 20 pence for a hundred, I don't have time to hand-wash cornflake bags. There is balance in everything.;)
One thing we have given up on is pizza deliveries, they are so expensive these days they are just ridiculous. They used to be an occasional treat, but they just aren't worth it anymore.:eek:Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

We now buy the asda fresh pizzas, that is our saturday night treat
actually they taste better than some pizza deliveries
Also we dont buy cartons of juice for the lunchboxes fill the childrens flasks instead.
Also in the lunchboxes i put tinned fruit in tubs instead of a apple which always got bruised.0 -
Wow I feel very wasteful now!! I do use washing liquid and softner and i notice a difference and I like the smell! If i use eco balls will i still get the fresh smell? Id love to start using them, but my lads clothes are often dirty and muddy and already take 2 washes toget clean with vanish, im not sure eco balls could cope with mud on white cotton????
I buy frebreeze for my car(maybe i should just open the windows!)
I buy tinned soup coz theres only 2 of us so its a lot of effort to make and its ok freezing it but ur freezer soon gets full of stuff and you dont have room for normal stuff. Also ive no idea how to make smooth tomato soup!
I read some of you put vinegar in your wash, do you mean the brown stuff you put on chips??? Dosent your washing smell of it??
And i noticed someone said shower gel, what will you use instead?
All this money saving is great but I just dont know if these alternatives will work!0 -

In my experience they are only good for unstained clothes. They can't cope with any kind of stains, maybe that's why mine came with a tube of stain remover.
If you want to know how good eco balls are just do a load of washing without putting in any kind of soap powder or softner. That's what it's like, washing in just plain water.elektra-2007 wrote: »stuff. Also ive no idea how to make smooth tomato soup!
Use a blender, a stick one does fine, then pour through a sieve.elektra-2007 wrote: »I read some of you put vinegar in your wash, do you mean the brown stuff you put on chips??? Dosent your washing smell of it??
Yes, the same vinegar you put on your chips. You can use brown but many people prefer to use white. Asia supermarkets, and many fruit/veg shop sell huge containers for a couple of quid.
Your washing does smell of vinegar when you take it out the machine, but the smell goes as it dries.elektra-2007 wrote: »And i noticed someone said shower gel, what will you use instead?
Soap? I use bubble bath. It's the same as shower gel but only costs about 20p per litre for own brand stuffelektra-2007 wrote: »All this money saving is great but I just dont know if these alternatives will work!
It will not cost much to give them a try, apart from the eco balls. Half a cup of vinegar next time you do the washing, 20p for bubble bath.
Pop over to the money savers old style board, they have loads of tips for using cheaper stuff.0 -

Bread- I always seem to make my own now in the £10 BM i got in the Argos sale
Cakes- Just make them
Ready meals- The same as above
Hundreds of different cleaning products- Just use stardrops now
Fresh pineapple- I use tinned now, much more convenient especially if its in water rather than syrup
Flapjacks/waffles for breakie- Just make them
Plastic bags- Have a trolly dolly
Pre packed sandwiches and lunches- It seems a special treat when I get one now!
Yoghurt
Greeting Cards- Just make em
Expensive body scrub- I use a mixture of carrier oil and sugar and works a treat just like one from Mr B's which costs a tenner
Body moisturiser- I get one given on prescription so don't think it's really a deliberate money saving thing.
Packaging for parcels- Just save the stuff from old online shopping, and any old carrier bags I still have hanging about
Er I think thats it thoughFeb GC: £200 Spent: £190.790 -
Oh and alcohol as I have not drunk for about a year- Wasn't a big drinker anyway and when i heard it had the same calories as two cheese burgers per bottle of wine.... well i'd rather have the cheese burgers hahaaFeb GC: £200 Spent: £190.790
