Cakes - home-made ones are cheaper and nicer. :)
  • Cheers yummymommy - I'm very excited! Not sure I'll be able to wait while it matures!!!

I'll let you know how it tastes in a few months (if it hasn't sent me blind)

!!!!!!, I hit the "Thanks" button instead of the "Quote" button.

I don't think budgeteer put the dish washer on just to wash the bags, more likely bunged the bag in with the rest of the washing up so it didn't cost any extra.

I don't buy instant coffee any more, which I used to drink throughout the day. Instead I buy a good ground coffee and have 1 cup a day that I really savour.

kitchen roll. Use t towels that have done a little work already. And I look out for reduced to clear serviettes in Asda, 100 for 5p etc to use as a liner on the bottom of my rubbish bins
    bin liners, use carrier bags.
talcum powder ( does anyone use this anymore?)
vacuum cleaner bags - it was so nice to get one with a canister instead.
    butter, we use marge
    eggs, husband has high chloresterol
newspapers & magazines - plenty online to read
never buy drinks out - we take a vacuum flask and plastic pots of tea coffee & dried milk with us when shopping etc and make a drink in the car.
posh perfume, I have a dab of Bodyshop oil based ones and sometimes mix two together.
bubble bath etc - I'm allergic to so many I can't be bothered any more
  • Tinned soup - it's so much more satisfying making my own and freezing in individual portions. One shelf in my freezer is devoted entirely to soup. Plus you know what has gone into them!

Jams and chutney - spent last summer foraging for berries (bilberries, blackberries, elder, rowan and sloes). Found a Hedgerow Recipes site on the web and loving trying out all the recipes. Scrounged an old small chest freezer and it's full of tubs of surplus berries ready to use when my stock goes down.

And, yes, with all this spare time I am retired! How did I find time to work?!

yoghurts - i realised i was buying them just to eat one or two then leave the rest of the multi-pack to go off in the fridge
kitchen roll - a cloth does the job now
ready made lasagne/fish pie/moussaka/shepherds pie etc
    takeaways
wholemeal or seeded bread - i make all my own in the breadmaker
ready made biscuits and cake - again i homebake treats now
    chocolate
window cleaning spray - i use vinegar and newspaper. i could never get rid of the streaks with those sprays anyway :p
tinned soup - i make my own with the exception of heinz tomato :D
bin bags - i use old free carrier bags
paid for carrier bags - i use cloth bags

i have never used fabric conditioner or air fresheners unless i get a freebie
i am weaning us all off crisps as they are a very expensive way to buy potato
i also never pay full price now for wash powder, washing up liquid, coffee, cheese or loo rolls instead i stockpile these when they are on offer because we use a lot of them.

  • Tesco Shortbread fingers (now that they are SOOOOO expensive!!)
Anything that is more expensive cos it is branded
Tinned soup - have a shelf full of HM chestnut/butternut squash soup in freezer

As for the idea of buying pancake mix/yorkshire pud mix, I would never dream of it - and ready made yorkshires? Why? They are too easy to make and do not take that long!

Will be making the waffles for pancake day soon - we prefer waffles and it is basically the same stuff anyway! Make them, freeze them, pull them o ut on Tuesday.
