i used to be a bus driver and one day an elderly lady came up to me and said that there wasnt anywhere she could sit

i walked along the aisle of the bus, saw someone had put her bags on the seat next to her and told her that if she wanted to use the extra seat for her bags then I would charge her for an extra ticket.

End result- she moved her bags and the old lady got a seat :-)

But IMO the OP was waaaaaay over the top in this

There probably will be a compo claim for injuries, if he had a broken nose he would probably have had to have surgery to correct it. Most buses have CCTV nowadays and I would not be at all surprised if the OP was arrested

Exactly queen of cheap. that is of course assuming this is not a windup post...our local paper has been known to print CCTV pics taken of incidents on buses..I would think the Op's employer would be rather interested..

Only reason I put my stuff on the seat (and only if it's not busy) is usually I hate people coming into my personal space - specially when they stink, or their music is louder than mine

anyone else think headbutting is rather extreme in this instance or is it just me?Surely that can be classed as common assault..??

Well this post has made my day. If true, the OP was only defending himself from a possible assault, so well done I say.

I figure head butting is probably justified in that case seeing as OP assumed the guy was trying to attack him and so he needed to defend himself.

I wonder if the OP is familiar with the concept of Reasonable force? The Criminal Justice Act outlines that the use of force must be "necessary" which means that if the OP could have just moved out of the way, he should have. If he was trapped he might get away with a preemptive strike but it doesn't sound like he was trapped. Head butting is an extreme act and not one that most people would automatically consider using! A punch is a far more common form of defence.

The use of force must also be proportionate to that which it seeks to prevent. I guess it depends on what threats the OP's "attacker" was making or what threat he had reason to believe the "attacker" posed to him.

I do think you are on slightly dodgy ground tho OP, with the information in the opening post.
