Finally, I am able to offer an update of significance.

The good news is that my case has finally been taken up by an ombudsman.

The bad news is that he completely disagrees with the adjudicators view and has found in favour of the bank :(

His provisional decision has been made by the buzz phrase of "what is fair and reasonable in the circumstances".

So it seems that being an employee of the NHS with the employment benefits that goes with it is not an good enough reason for a PPI sale to be inappropriate to a person's needs.

Whilst it is indeed fair for a bank to take advantage of a customer's naivety although supposedly unfair for that same customer to request a refund when they finally realise they'd been duped.

I have sent them a letter of similar assertiveness to my previous letter to them reaffirming my point of view, although I admit I do not hold out much hope and am basically ready to admit defeat because I've finally had enough of the whole sorry affair now.

I suppose the only small consolation I can take is that I am now suitably more experienced and weary of the tactics that businesses use to sell people things they do not want nor necessarily need.

I may now in future be able to question my own naivety and perhaps ask myself, do I need this? Is this right? Instead of relying on a sales person to adequately advise me.

Because that is the mistake isn't it? Trusting a sales person to behave honourably and fairly.

Tough luck, mate, I do admire your fortitude in continuing with this complaint for so long. It's a pity it's all come to naught after all this time:(

    Thanks.

But if the ombudsman disagrees with me, as it seems he does. Then my avenues seem closed. So gutting as it is, at least it's almost over.

I can finally confirm that the ombudsman has not upheld my complaint.

Obviously this is a frustrating result given the span of time it took and the visits to Mr Cockup FOS took along the way.

Almost amusingly I am required to either accept or reject the decision by the 27th November. I'm quite tempted to delay that response by two and a half years.

I guess that I will simply have to put this down as a life lesson and use the experience to take more responsibility and initiative when dealing with banks and my financial management.

From now on, when ever I need to apply for a loan or mortgage I'm going to do my best to research everything I need to know before hand. Do I need this insurance? Do I have cover already elsewhere which would effectively invalidate this? Is it a legal requirement? Is it the sensible thing to do? Can I choose to get it elsewhere?

I hope to be less gullible and more sceptical to make myself less vulnerable to having my naive innocence exploited by a banker.

I sense the bitterness in your post, try not to be too disheartened. You gave it all you had...
