Whilst out running a dog ran out of a house at full speed and barking angrily which I recognised to be the bark of a pit bull!

I'd already started thinking of how to dealt with it once it had sunk its teeth into my leg. I felt it come into contact with my trainer (not bitten) but it didn't chase me as I ran very quickly down the street. I'm not sure if it was a pit bull, it might have been a bull terrier as it was too dark to see. I guess they have the same bark...

how would you know/recognise what a pit bull sounds like. They have been banned in this country for over 15 years - that is some memory to be able to distinguish dog barks.

If you mean a staffordshire bull terrier (the non-illegal breed) then they don't necessarily sound any more like bull terriers than any other kind of dog.

As for cats, yuck. dirty smelly stinking creatures releasing the contents of their sausage roll hole into my garden. I would love to take bags of cat poo back to the houses they came from.

Guns are banned in this country as well, but people know what they look like.
  • i too am not a fan of dog poop...even my 5 yr old knows that you have to pick up the poop....on our way to school every morning...every few yards im saying mind the poo...mind the poo, watch where youre standing....its a nightmare the amount of timees we've had to leave his shoes outside as hes stepped in it.

aside from it being the law it is just common decency to pick it up....i did see some ppl out with there puppies i stood their watched the puppie do its business smack bang in the middle of the path...cue me...you gonna pick that up..his reply oh i didnt realise that was one of my puppies, i'll pick that up now.....on the way back from school oh surprise surprise it was still there! grrrr

Your post stated you could tell a pit bulls bark i.e. how it sounds.

You have made a poor comparison with your example provided. I'm sure most people could not tell what type of gun was fired by the noise it made despite knowing what a gun looks like.

Many people can tell what a pit looks like but I would guess that the majority of the UK population can't tell the difference in looks between a pit and a badly bred staffie.

I pointed out that example because you seem to think that because I haven't physically been near pit bulls that I could have no way of knowing what they sound like. Do you not realise it's possible to know what something sounds like without having physical contact with it? For example by listening to a recording just like people know what a gun looks like because they've seen an image of one?

Pitbulls and Staffordshire bull terriers are related breeds which is why they're likely to have similar sounding barks/growls.

My friend was bitten by a dog whilst out running. He debated whether to do anything about it and after a few days of feeling quite sore, eventually reported it to the police.

Turns out this dog had already bitten someone before and had been spared being put down on condition that it was always muzzled in public.

Dog's dead now. Owner's pretty p!ssed off I expect. But hey, they should have muzzled the dog.

It's not the animal.... it's the blo0dy owner.

I used to run regularly down the local trail way, in September 08 during my usual evening run I was bitten by a dog. I saw it coming towards me and decided to stop to let it pass (I was on a bridge) for some reason the dog ran up to me, stopped, sniffed then bit my thigh!

I was shocked and scared and screamed at the owners to help me, they just shrugged and went the other way with their dog following. :(

I had to drag myself a mile back home crying and hoping I would see someone who would help, I didn't unfortunately. I wish I had my phone with me so I could have called the police.

I wrote to my local paper the next day who made my story into a half page article warning people to be more careful.

I never saw the couple and their dog again, if I ever do I won't be held responsible for my actions.................I had to have stitches, and antibiotics

I have two dogs and always pick up poo, but down our residential street there are grass verges each side of the road and I hate it if any of my dogs stops for a sniff or a wee on the grass because there is so much dog poo some people may think it's my dogs and I haven't cleaned up.

They are likely to have or do have similar sounding barks or growls? Your first post said you recognised the bark of a pit bull - was it perhaps not if it would also sound like a staffy? Your initial post was very judgemental towards the breed, making a statement that is likely to have little basis in fact.

a dog ran at you - alleged fact.
It was a pit bull and you knew becuase you recognised the bark - highly unlikely - not fact.

As the owner of 2 breeds who regularly make the papers for dog attacks (neither of which is a pitt bull!) these assumptions really rile me - incase you hadn't noticed :p.

Staffys are often quoted as the attacking breed in the media to huge uproar but when it is confirmed later that it wasn't a staffy or the dog was poorly socialised by the owners this becomes less newsworthy.

Over the last few weeks we have found an increasing amount of dog mess left in the middle of the pavement near our house, often right outside our driveway. It's difficult to avoid when walking home from work at night, as the streetlights aren't very bright. We've thankfully not stepped right in it yet, but have had a couple of close shaves.

We live in a quiet residential area and we often see dog-walkers, but most are considerate and pick up their dogs' mess; it was rare to see poop until recently.

I just think this it such a disgusting and anti-social thing for people to let their dog foul the pavements. Pooper-scoopers are not difficult or dirty to use. Even if owners really can't stomach the clear-up, at least make the dog go in the road gutter or something, so we don't have to walk in it !:mad::mad::mad:

I may be jumping to conclusions, but don't think it's a coincidence that I've seen a young lad walking a labrador puppy in the area recently. I haven't caught him in the act yet but I will certainly confront him if I do and give him a piece of my mind !

    Rant over. Thanks for listening.

Doubt if it's him....more likely be the puppy:D
