Potterton Boiler Locking Out/Rads Not Getting Hot

Options
Hi, our radiators don't tend to heat up quickly and are not particularly hot either. Our boiler regularly locks out...

Could this be solved by getting it serviced? I am considering signing up to British Gas Boiler Cover etc which includes a boiler cover, will there be a delay before I can schedule an appointment to get them to come and complete a service, any advise appreciated... Thank you..

Is pump working. If pump separate from boiler, you can lightly hold pipes about ten inches either side of pump, turn on central heating, you should then feel hot water flowing. Have rads been bled.
Otherwise please post model of boiler and whether system is open vented ( two cold water tanks in loft and separate hot water tank) or sealed .
Gas boiler should be serviced every twelve months by competent gas bloke.

    Thanks roger196

It's a kingfisherrsl50 and was installed in 2006. I do need to get it serviced, what sort of approx price would a service be?

The rads have been bled - will check the other pointers this evening.

A regular boiler so you will have an open vented system I'm thinking. Please describe what you mean by "locks out". I'm suspecting what you mean is "shuts down" when the boiler gets up to temp and the stat kicks in. However, to be sure please describe exactly what is happening in sequence.

Oh and yes I agree - check circulator is actually working.

    Cheers

Hi, it's a regular boiler as you describe.. It's open vented..

The hot water is on a timer, sometimes the water just doesn't heat. Also say for example I want to turn up the heating temp on the dial to make the rads hotter, the light doesn't go on on the boiler. All the lights are out, so I have to press the reset button and then it fires up and starts heating.

Hope this makes a little more sense, but I can provide more info if needed.
It hasn't been serviced for the past 2 years..

    Thank you..

Can you describe please what happens when you press the reset button on the boiler. Does it attempt to light at all? Does it light, burn for a short period and then go out? Do you see what I mean? What exactly happens - its that sort of detail..

    Cheers

this is the newer model with the Lock out light on the front panel .

this could be overheating and then locking out .
this could be a number of things ,it may be the pump is faulty and the boiler is over heating .
this boiler also has a flue thermostat and that can also make it lock out ,this could lock out if flue was blocked or even something as simple as needing a service .
i would say you would be best to get it on the bg cover while it is working then if its faulty later then can fix it .

    hope this helps .

    Thanks heating-eng

Homecare 200 package is currently £15.33 per month as they are including 10% off

    http://www.britishgas.co.uk/products-and-services/maintenance-and-repair/exclusive-offers.html

This works out at approx £183. If I was to just get the boiler serviced anyway it wouldn't be cheap I'm guessing. Is this package ok?

Package Homecare 300 covers plumbing and drains
Package Homecare 400 covers home electrics
