Excessive postage etc

On 1st Feb I won an auction for an item and paid immediately. A couple of days later the little box symbol appeared to show it had been dispatched, which I was quite happy with as the seller stated within 4 days.

Today the parcel arrived with the postage showing 'post by 08.02.10' which means that it was posted no earlier than 7th Feb, long after the seller showed dispatch. The item was also very dirty but this is a side issue and a bit of elbow grease has dealt with that.

But my real gripe is the postage - this was shown as £6.50 on the listing, and as I had no idea how much the item weighed I assumed it would be fair. However the postage label shows it is 430g and therefore cost no more than £2.14.

I emailed the seller and suggested that a partial refund would be appropriate but the only response I have received is along the lines of if you don't like it return it for a refund. I don't want to return it but would like a bit of the excess postage refunded as I feel I've been ripped off.

What would others do next?

You can leave feedback that is nuteral, or even bad if your that annoyed!!! It will warn others of over charging - i do look for it!!

I reported someone to ebay for this, and put a partial claim in with paypal. Im still waiting for 2 items bought over 10 days ago. I wouldnt mind but they were needed for a birthday last friday.
Have decided to start a paypal claim on both, sod it i say !!! They have nearly £100 of mine and i still have no idea where the items are.

  • its true that you agreed to paying that postage, so theres nothing that can be done about it. if you wanted to make sure you were getting a fair deal u could have emailed and asked the weight beforehand!!

you cant really neg him for the postage issue because u did agree to it, neutral maybe if really neccessary, but maybe on the DSR's knock it down a bit?? or wait and speak to the seller and see what they have to say!!

If the weight of the item had been stated in the listing I wouldn't have been happy with it though, and wouldn't have bid. Maybe ebay should think about making the packaged weight part of the listing!

but then as i said you could have asked the weight if you wanted to check! most people wont have weights for items unless its jewelery. If you thought it was a little excessive you could have checked other listings on ebay, or googled the item to find the weight then put in on royal mail. you were happy to pay it, and got the item safely, so all is well! Its like paying £4.99 for gifts on certain websites, only costs them £2 maximum to post but people still do it!!

Yes I could have asked the weight but how many people do if fb is good and postage dsr is ok? Looking back at his other items postage seems to have been fair.

I know it's only a small amount but it's just naffed me off!

Do you not take into account the priceof the postage + item then decide if its bid you want to make? I dont ee what the weight matters as long as the overall price is fine.

    You often see for eample:

    Item £8 - postage -£2 - wining overall price- £10.
    Item £5.50 - postage - £4.50 -winning overall price - £10.

Makes no difference at all and if anything id rather the seller keep the extra pence rather thna more fees going to Ebay.

Fair point gazza. But when I sell things I charge a fair price for postage (actual cost + 50p or so for time & packaging) so I generally expect that the quoted price will reflect the weight of the item.

I think it's just the unhelpful attitude of the seller that has put my back up too.

What about the cost of packaging, maybe cost of parking, petrol and time spend taking said item to the post office ?
  • i know and to be fair i charge a fair price - under the rules they have done wrong so if you feel strongly hit them with a neg. Dont thnk you can force the seller to take anything off.

    Good luck whatever you decide
