(I'm about halfway through 'Tickling the English', despite not being supposed to start it until I've got other important stuff I needed to get done, done. :o

Tickling the English is on my to-do-list, so I'm gonna join you and make this my next read. I bought this for mr smf2 for christmas and he loved it.

I've just fnished 'Tickling the English' by Dara O'Briain.

It was good, with more history thrown in than I might have anticipated, but he writes well, intelligently and, not unexpectedly, funnily, so it ripped along at a fair pace. 310 pages took less than a day. I'm not sure whether it deserves four or five claps, so maybe I'll give it four and a half for now, only hampered by the fact that it would be mean to cut one of our little clappy smileys in two.

Sounds good - have requested it from the library!

It's all right people - when eyebrows are raised and questions asked about our "problem with books", just quote this:

"Even when reading is impossible, the presence of books acquired produces such an ecstasy that the buying of more books than one can read is nothing less than the soul reaching towards infinity... we cherish books even if unread, their mere presence exudes comfort, their ready access, reassurance."

LOL I'm glad I'm not the only one who has created a database for their books. I was bored rigid one weekend and decided to make a list..... title, author, genre......d'oh

I am just waiting for the next book in the Wheel of Time series to be released; I'm hoping it will be around Xmas time again so I can ask for it as a present!!!

Finished a couple of books this week - The Shakespeare Curse about a kidnap centred on a Shakespearean curse, it was okay but I don't think i'll be desperately hunting out the first book in the series. They Do It With Mirrors a Miss Marple mystery which I always enjoy but class as light reading. Now slogging my way through David Starkey's Six Wives.

Finished Perfect Match by Jodi Picoult - it was ok, I reckon it was about 50 pages too long.
Started The Importance of Being Seven, by Alexander McCall Smith, he's one on my favourite authors. So far not disappointing!

Finished Starter For Ten by David Nicholls - wonderful. Now reading The Understudy by the same, not enjoying this one as much but still a good read.
    My debt free diary | Post Office loan: £2131 1429.38 | Barclaycard: £4429 1988.12 | Paypal Credit £322.71 574.91 | Monzo Flex £169.03 |

Total £4151.44 | £2900.30 of £7051.74 paid off since diary started October 2024.
  • lilian1977, I read Starter for Ten a few months ago and really enjoyed it. Have you read his latest book 'One Day', it's one I couldn't put down, had to reach for the kleenex at one point though.

Reading 'The Weight of Silence' by Heather Gudenkauf at the minute. I picked it up becuse the cover blurb likened it to Jodi Picoult, and it is very similar to her writing but perhaps not just as gripping. I'm only half way through so will reserve judgement until I get to the end.
