Part of the Furniture 10,000 Posts Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!

It's Shrove Tuesday next week, so Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, 17th February. Traditionally, Christians use the period of Lent as self-denial in preparation for Easter.

I've never been one to deny myself :D so try to take up a new skill for Lent. Two years ago, I taught myslef to crochet. This year DD has asked for a quilt for her bed, so I'll be teaching myself quilting.

I was thinking of other things to try:
  • baking a cake
  • cooking a roast dinner
  • keeping hens
  • dressmaking
  • needlepoint
  • making cards
  • trying your hand at hand made soap
  • planting seeds
  • cross stitch
sure I'll think of more later :)

Anyone else for a new challenge :T

    What a great idea Penny!!

I'm up for either quilting or crocheting

I can't remember how to crochet - my late nan taught me many years ago and the skill has left me, any tips of how to learn again?

I would love to make a blanket out of squares

I'd also like to make a quilt blanket out of fabric squares I have and other odments of material

its a form of needle work. I fancy making soap or maybe crochet. tried to knit when i was first pregnant and it wasn't a great sucess! Or maybe it's just that my MIL is a rubbish teacher?
I'm sure I could have a go at crocheting a nice scarf for myself and by the time I get the hang of it it will be ready to wear by next winter!

  • What's Needlepoint?

It's canvas work embroidery ;) I make cushion covers using strands of tapestry wool, using half-cross stitch. It's easy to learn - I used a book and was away :T Elizabeth Bradley books are lovely, but the kits are pricey

  • I'm going to join this and try to teach myself to crochet for Lent. Hopefully I can make a nice blanket or, as I really want to, crochet some little toys. All I have at the mo is green wool, so I'll start with a little frog if I can find a pattern. Great idea, PP. Thank you very much :)

  • My word, looks lovely but complicated, thinks I will give that one a miss.

I love the idea of taking something up but have no idea what to take up.

Could I take up birdwatching? DH bought a nice new bird station yesterday for our garden as I have been such a miserable heffalump with my back and stuff and also bought a birdwatching book - what do you think?

    Great Idea!
Im up for the crochet challenge having seen the thread and attic 24! I want me one of those cardigans! And a bag! and ummm sooo many lotsa other stuff!
When I make the weekly trip to town tomorrow, Im going to get some wool and a crochet hook or 10 and make erm.. something! I want a bag, that looks like one big piece that you sew into a bag - how do you sew them together? are they crochet together or sewn?
I digress - I must learn not to waffle!
*stands up and does the brownie guide salute and says "I am going to learn to crochet for lent and put a pic up here to prove it at easter!"*
