I read somewhere on this board, several months ago, in a post from the wife of an employee of a washing powder manufacturer, that the recommended quantities should be halved, as there is no need to use as much as they would like you to.

Also, around the same time, I read that users of Vanish powder that you put into the wash to clear stains and make things white and bright should switch to Napisan, as this is the same product from the same manufacturer at about a third of the price.

We have followed the Napisan advice and it's true. One of the best tips we've read on this website, and thanks to the original poster whoever she was.

Thank you both. I've just felt a bit strange about putting something brown in with clean washing! I'll give it a try when I can dry outdoors (if it ever stops raining again).

I read somewhere today that white washing can look dull/grey because of not using manufacturers' recommended amount of powder. Anyone agree?

Well, you only need a couple of tablespoons of vinegar per washing-load so in a full wash there won't be much colouring in the water in any case.

About the laundry detergent dosage: in whose interest is it that you'd use the full dosage the manufacturers suggest? That's why those laundry-tablets are a terrible idea imo. I always use half the dosage of the manufacturers suggest and my laundry is just fine. I also echo the Napisan idea for whites, it's fantastic. Tesco were offering two packs for £3 recently so I bought a few. My manky and stained tea-towels came up a treat but you could try borax instead if you've got some hanging around.

might try napisan on OH's undies :rotfl:

today is the Big Day. Machine has been detoxed and is now getting its first pair (my best ones) of black jeans to wash. I am going to go for 40 degrees as I do still think The Beast (w.machine) can be slightly eco friendly, even if Beast is now old and cranky.
If it still stains them, I am going to put on my hiking boots and KICK it :D  I have so many large bills this year, I just know Beast is going to the great machine dump in the sky :(
