My poor kitty.

So the past few days my nutter cat had been throwing up, I noticed a part of mesh came up in the sick and figured he'd been at my daughters fairy dress again. I was right. The times before he had eaten it (without my knowledge) I'd find bits of it in with his poops.

He'd gradually got more and more lethargic, he didn't even attack the other cat once

My OH doesn't like my cats, and told me he would be fine, etc etc.

Anyways this morning I wake up to more sick everywhere and him just lying there, I couldn't believe how badly he had deteriorated.

I don't have pet insurance, I was going to get it, but I thought I knew best what with them being indoor cats, I didn't bank on him having an eating disorder.

Xrays show the mesh netting plus hair from his stomach had created a ball in his intestines, nothing could go down or out.

He's had the surgery, he's now on a drip in the vets overnight to see if he makes it, apparently he was very dehydrated but he was drinking lots of water whilst he was ill, but I feel awful for not taking him straight away.

The vet told me the bill will be between £500 - £600  Luckily I have the money to pay for it, but I feel like such an idiot for not getting the insurance sorted out.

They also told me I can pay it up over 6 months, which I might do, as OH is giving me serious grief about letting them do the surgery on him. Needless to say, I'm not talking to him. He says "it's just a cat"

That maybe so, but to me and DD he is part of the family. I know it's a lot of money, but we can afford it without going without.

Just feeling very frustrated by the negative attitude I'm getting from everyone for paying that much money on a ....cat.

I will get insurance sorted when he come home, I presume all insurances will exclude him eating stuff and getting it stuck in his belly from now on I presume?

Not sure why I posted this, needed to rant, no-one else thinks I did the right thing :(

Of course you did the right thing, kitty was ill, so you took him to the vets and he is better now.

If it was a child you would have done the same, even if you had to pay!

I am sure some people have paid alot more for their animals!!!
    :)

You've just pushed me to get my kitties insurance sorted once and for all. Really sorry for your kitty but thank you so much for the rant- I can't afford £500-£600 (even over 6 months)!

I think you should put bits of fairy dress mesh in OH's dinner and see how he likes a big ball of mesh stuck in his intestines :( He's so mean!

I bet he's spent more than £600 on his xbox/ps3 once you take games/accessories into account...

Of course you did the right thing taking him to the vets. The cat's part of your family, if anything happened to my dog i would pay any amount of money to make her better, why should a cat be any different?

Tell your OH to sod off, it may just "be a cat" to him but it obviously means more to you :)

Hope he gets better soon xx

You did the right thing button, I would do it in a heartbeat for my cats, they are part of the family after all.

I don't think insurance would count this as a pre existing condition as it is a one off and once he gets better, he will hopefully be as if it had never happened.

I hope poor kitty gets well soon, sending lots of positive vibes and ((hugs)) xx

leaving your family aside....is there a single thing, or even combination of things that you could have spent £500 on that would really be better value than getting your darling cat back safe and well?
    Thought so....Nothing!!
Pets are priceless so do not let anyone make you feel bad for how you have spent your money. As you say, you have the cash and no one will go without because you have chosen to spend it in this way.
When one of mine has been particularly expensive I like to remind them that they need to offer value for money..so that means lots of extra kisses and cuddles. Hee hee
  • I had a £500 vet bill in January after my cat was attacked by a dog. Not once did my OH suggest not getting him treatment. He even took him to the vet for several check ups. And he never complained when I bought the cat all sorts of expensive food to tempt him to eat.

I've paid a similar sum on an operation and other procedures on one of my cats - the choice was that or euthanasia - not a choice, actually.

How did you get lumbered with someone so lacking in compassion and empathy? Doesn't he realise how much pain the poor cat has gone through? And how much it hurts you and your DD to see your beloved pet in so much distress. Your DH needs a good hard kick up the backside (which I will deliver if Magpye doesn't get there first).

It's not "only a cat" - it's your cat and there is only one of her. But it is only money, you will get more.

Thanks everyone. I know *I* did the right thing, but he sees £600 on a cat I bought for £20. He's not the only one who's told me similar things.

He's just not got an emotional attachment to Archie. Of course he has no qualms about replacing a PS3 for £300.

He mentioned it to someone at work (I had called in him tears) and they were telling him to phone the vet and cancel the op  and then to tell me he had died during surgery. What is wrong with people?!!

My mum, who dislikes my cats incidentally (Just not keen on any animal) has been the most supportive about it, and she calls him the "skinny wild thing". Just shows she must like him, deep down :D

So does anyone know about insurance? Will Archie be exempt from any intestine related problems in the future now? He does seem to have a V bad habit of eating what he shouldn't. In fact, at the vets, he managed to jump off the table and go for a nosey in the bin :rotfl: His fave place, bless!
