eeek, I picked a bad time for an afternoon nap! Are you ok pinkhayley?

I'd say gas 4-5 and test after 25 mins, but mine took 30-35 (my oven is old and a bit rubbish tho!)

    xxx

Yep it's all ok, just in the oven baking now, Weezl. Thank you to Allegra who advised correctly on oven temperatures in your absence :)

It smells delicious so will report back this evening when I've sampled it! :D

  • Eggless Apple Cake

Sorry Weezl, I think I must have done something horribly wrong somewhere with baking the eggless apple cake.:o After about 1 hour and a half in total in the oven it just has not cooked inside:eek: I'm really disappointed because it smells lovely but just not got a cake consistency at all. I presume I must have made an error with measuring out the ingredients!

  • I've taken it out of the tin and cut it up so it's not really liquidy, it's just.... squidgy!! OH tried it and compared the texture to bread and butter pudding  I think I may have used too much apple maybe?

I'm going to eat it cus there's no eggs in it and after an hour and a half in the even very much doubt it's going to poison me! Despite not turning out as expected, it tastes nice so we will probably have it as a pudding with some custard.

yeah the texture is a lot squidgier than a light sponge with egg... I think I need to up the vinegar and bicarb and reduce the liquidyness...

I hope despite the texyure that you enjoy it :o sorry for wasting your ingredients if not. (and yes, it will definitely not poison you :))

Fear not Weezl, I've just had a big piece for pudding and it was fine :) It will definitely get eaten, just wasn't quite what I was expecting that's all!

OK c, i understand, but stone ground flour contains stone, another non food item.

I'm not knocking your point C, and I respect your view. I think I'm just saying that all flour will have some form of non food item in it. Just as no mater how well we wash our carrots they'll always have earth in them and no matter how well we wash our hands before eating my piece of toast will inevitably have dead skin cells on it.

I'm only saying this cos it feels like the kind of view that if you extrapolate it further could end up costing you loads of money and time but for no real benefit. Which isn't what I want for my friends:(

It's a bit like you telling me to get to bed last night, I say it cos I care :)

I know you do Weezl. I dont doubt that you care about people generally...and that you care about me personally..I dont doubt it for a minute.

....and right at this moment you have caught me struggling with my conscience. I was aware anyway that supermarkets dont give a **** about us (the food-eating consumer in the street) - all they care about is loadsa profit from us all:(. I feel I am learning a few lessons at this moment about how ultimately some people in Government have been "bought and paid for" (to put it bluntly) and others do care basically (but want an easy answer as to how to feed the burgeoning millions..). The phrase "there are no easy answers" is definitely at the forefront of my mind right now.

I've been slicing/dicing/sauteing my own personal dinner tonight torturing myself about exactly what I personally should do/can do right now. I do believe VERY strongly indeed in people having a healthy (ie natural) diet. I was visualising people I know socially and other people I come across...and the people I know socially look/are one hell of a lot healthier and look one hell of a lot healthier than ones I come across in other contexts of any description and I am remembering one person who recently said "we are criticised for spending what we do on food (ie quite a lot according to some people) - but then the next second their kids are eating a packet of crisps:eek:" and I understood/agreed with exactly where she is coming from - and yes...she is slim/very healthy-looking/very fit..

...and...right at this very moment....I honestly dont know what to do. I dont want people living on toast and "crap" - even temporarily....and...yep...I've done it myself in extremis. Hence - part of the reason I dont want other people doing it.

So - right at this very moment - I am tossing up in my mind which is the "lesser of two evils" - whether to take the risk that other people will live on "toast + crap" (even temporarily) or to figure "well - at least in just eating a Subsistence Diet they are going a coupla steps better than that....and lets just cross my fingers that they will go on to actually eat healthily".

I dont know. I DO know that many people will try to buy consumer possessions they cant afford and/or have children they cant afford - and then try to cut back the money they spend on food to accommodate these things. I WISH WISH WISH they wouldnt do this:eek:

So - I'm having a crisis of conscience right at this minute - about whether I try to help them get through having made these bad decisions with a Subsistence Diet (because its at least a sight better than "toast and crap") or think "Ohmegawd - if I do that - then I will be helping these darn supermarkets sell us a load of junk food - AND helping these blind idiot Government Ministers not deal with the root of the problem".

Right at this minute - my head hurts:eek::eek::eek:
