somebody lovely sent me this :)

I won't embarrass her by naming her, but it is the kind of gift that's so in keeping with a radically minded vegetarian who thinks things through, speaks her mind, not afraid to challenge government injustice, does her research, and likes others (and promotes them hugely) who are quirky and eccentric, but visionary.

Been thinking about this here condiments, salt, pepper, herbs and spices issue.

Thus far we've been trying to only buy what shirley will use in a month in order to keep her initial outlay below the £100 mark.

This is a worthy goal, but is feeling in some areas like a false economy...

    Example:

    119499.jpg?ts=633754896860

is 40p but only 14 g of mustard powder is contained.

    This on the other hand:

    107349.jpg?ts=633851508720

is 93p but yields over 4 times the mustard powder (the actual ingredient flavour we want!

I'm thinking of asking Shirley to consider her first month to be £103, to include a small stock cupboard accumulation, but she will only consume £100 worth of goods within the month.

    How does that sound?

I don't think it's cheating.... All the meals will cost below the amounts we've said still...

The phrase "speculate to accummulate" is coming to mind here - which means I would think that is reasonable "accommodation" for the sake of longer-term economy.

Yep - I think thats okay.

Ditto. For instance, my grocery bill will be slightly higher next month b/c for some reason, I have a lot of spices/herbs that need replacing - but that's not a "normal" month IYSWIM. Similar to the loaf tin issue, I see really basic things like salt & pepper to be more kitchen supplies than "food". I mean, is there honestly a family out there that doesn't have salt & a least some kind of dried green herbs in their kitchen? :o

I know it doesn't help with Calcium Gate, but if I had to eat porridge 5 days a week, I might rebel. :lipsrseal

    Agreed re para 1.

"porridge 5 days a week" - hmmm....well I tend to have it everyday:) - so theres obviously an element of peoples different personal tastes there - so - it would be good if there is any "room for manoeuvre" to allow for that?:)

I'm sorry to impart more doom and gloom but are you aware that SP raisins are coated in trans fat? (partially hydrogenated vegetable oil) As 4KG raisins being used per month it might be significant.
Ingredients Seedless Raisins (99%), Glaze (Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil).

Maybe raisins could be bought from some other store instead then? Would that maybe help?

Reason being = I think that stores are in process of phasing out using trans fats - so maybe one store still has them, but another store might have phased them out for that same product?
