You guys are doing an amazing job.

I love the idea that you are working so hard at making it healthy, but...I have a but.

Thinking of the people I know who have financial issues and could be helped by something like this, none of them really cook from scratch. They all eat meat in every meal.

I'm not sure how you are going to attract the people who will most need this kind of plan if they are anything like the people I know.

In regards to meat and sunday roasts. My DH would not cope with pilchards as his main source of meat....he doesn't do fish and we generally have some kind of 'roast type' meal during the winter and bbq's in the summer.

I'm sure my children and I would happily eat the food on your plan, I'm quite sure my husband wouldn't.

Re Sunday Roast - if you check the menu plans on OS board loads of people don't bother with a roast. I have heard that most people don't cook a roast anyway they go and get one down the pub.

I do a roast. Always a chicken that gets stretched but only once a month because when I worked full time I just felt like I was then cooking all weekend with the roast, the stock, clearing up etc.

I've got a good recipe for chicken and leek pie that doesn't use any milk at all - marge to soften two chopped leeks, add tablespoon flour, take of heat add stock stir bring to boil and then add approx 400g left over chicken (but I've used less and meat hungry hubby never noticed). it's more healthy fat wise to do a cobbler topping which is my usual ;) Price of leeks makes a huge difference on the total price though.

I'm going to make some oat bar thingies whilst the oven is on with our lonely fish pie in it....

As an aside - I know I don't eat enough calcium - Dairy makes my eczema itch badly, I don't like soya and I never remember to take supplements regularly :o.
What's the thing you're meant to do with egg shells?? I'll try it - as long as someone can tell me that the bacteria on the outside of the eggs is definitely killed in the process :o

You probably don't want to hear from me again ...

personally I'm enjoying hearing all about it. And there's no point us all thinking we're doing a healthy plan and then finding out later we've forgotton something.

I don't know much about nutrition, but if you need any help finding out anything then do shout.

Hi Newlywed nice to see you. How you doing? I know things have been a bit :( re work stuff. You OK?

the bacteria on an egggshell are destroyed at 72 degrees. You could boil the eggs first, peel them and make egg mayo sarnies or somesuch, and then use the now sterile shells for the calcium?

Oooooooh does that offer extend to me too! I wondered if anyone might do a little research about whether adding bicarb to lemon juice destroys the vitamin C.

    Fancy a bit of googling?

Yeah, still no work but keeping busy doing other stuff. And the money will last a few months if we're careful. In fact would love to not have to go back to work but summat has to pay the bills :o OH has a few possible decorating/diy jobs coming up but nothing concrete just yet.

so egg mayo sounds like a plan - google says they should be oranic - does it really have to be organic eggs or are just free rangers ok?

I just know I'm going to be an osteoporosis statistic when I'm older :o

Time to make dinner and raisin honey oat bar things..... catch you later

I think 5 British portions is more than the USDA american advice. They'd be happy with Bob having 3 cups chopped toms, and will also count potatoes, which the British Govt excluded and called a carb.

We can easily meet the american food pyramid requirements.

What other European countries shall I look at?

    Maybe Germany, France and Italy?:)
