Hi there Weezl et al. I've been lurking and just had a couple of comments to make.
A couple of years ago my OH worked with one of the nutrition people responsible for putting together the 5 a day fruit and veg guidelines for the UK.
Potatoes were deliberately removed from the list of valid f&v because it was thought that most Brits (or at least those most in need of nutritional advice IYSWIM) would rely on spuds/chips for their veg, and perhaps wouldn't see the need for including green veg and fruit.
Potatoes are rich in several vitamins and fibre, and in a varied diet with other f&v there is no reason not to include potatoes as a veg.
I will ask if there are any journal papers to back this up, as I hate mentioning things like this without any proof iyswim. (although if other countries do include potatoes then that seems to back this up, but I'll ask anyway).
Have you thought about Jonagold apples? They are usually the cheapest apples (can't access tesco.com atm so can't check price), and I've used them in cooking too. Just a thought. (think it was around 50p kg a week or two ago iirc)
Anyway keep up the good work everybody"! <goes back to lurking>
It's only a game

I'm sorry to impart more doom and gloom but are you aware that SP raisins are coated in trans fat? (partially hydrogenated vegetable oil) As 4KG raisins being used per month it might be significant.
Ingredients Seedless Raisins (99%), Glaze (Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil).
yeergh, why do they do that. Have just looked at all the raisins on mySupermarket and all the Asda raisins have that. I would never have thought of checking a pkt of raisins for fat at all, let alone what type of fat. Sulphur Dioxide is bad enough0 -
I think the reason we came to for not shopping around was that it seemed exclusive of those who couldn't access those shops. What I thought I'd do is say, 'here's the £100 asda list. If you had been able to shop around a bit that month, it is possible to achieve a further £5 saving
'
I used to shop around a fair bit doing the 50p a day challenge and countless times it seemed to put people off rather than help people to buy in to the plan sadly
Boodle 2 chickens would be lovely if we can afford them but because of the families calcium and omega needs we sadly can't
I feel as though I am giving you all very bad news.
Can I just check is this because people believe the lack of sunday roast is too much deprivation for anyone in the UK? I think I am a bit naive, and I know you all have lots more access to other people's real life thoughts.
Thank you all for sharing what you have, I do appreciate it

I think Sunday Lunch is on the decline tbh. Go back to the aims of this - for me the healthy option of more F and V for all has to win over the desirable of the Sunday Lunch.

malteser, thanks for noticing about the transfats, 2 responses, practical and scientific:
Scientific:
At one level a diet which contains 1% transfats, in an ingredient which is used in an amount of roughly 30g per person per day, is forming 4% of their energy for the day. The transfats are 1% of this and so they would form 0.04% of shirley's diet, and less of DS and bob's diet.
the World Health Organization has tried to balance public health goals with a practical level of trans fat consumption, recommending in 2003 that trans fats be limited to less than 1% of overall energy intake. We have definitely achieved this. By comparison, most developed nations diets contain an average of 10-15% of energy derived from harmful fats daily. So I think we've already offered an incredible health benefit to Bob and Shirl.
Practical: 'Shirley, if you're concerned, wash the raisins before use'

Thank you:) Mrs B don't lurk, I would love the research if you do dig it out, although I do trust your DH, just I'm aware we need to make sure others know why we are doing what we're doing IYSWIM?

I only mentioned trans fats because the rules said avoid if possible.
Re Sunday Roast - if you check the menu plans on OS board loads of people don't bother with a roast. I have heard that most people don't cook a roast anyway they go and get one down the pub.0 -

I knowthanks. Do you feel my response covers us well? x

Not at all; I just remembered that you seemed really excited about the roast dinner before. What about using the pork burger recipe with the apple sauce and making it more like a meatloaf with roasties etc? It was pretty cheap to make and could just go in the oven with everything else. I used to hate roast dinners when I was a kid and loved having something else! Some other protein with the same veggies would be good, a pie or sausages etc… Would that help? Is the turkey leg still in somewhere? Could you use that for a Sunday night? JGod is good, all the time
Do something that scares you every day
