What about using the pork burger recipe with the apple sauce and making it more like a meatloaf with roasties etc? It was pretty cheap to make and could just go in the oven with everything else. I used to hate roast dinners when I was a kid and loved having something else! Some other protein with the same veggies would be good, a pie or sausages etc… Would that help? Is the turkey leg still in somewhere? Could you use that for a Sunday night? J
awww thanks sian
erm, we've axed the pork and turkey to get those essential omegas and calcium. there's some cooking baconand 4 cans pilchards but that's it :rotfl:

PS pleeeeeeese don't forget everyone that none of these recipes will be wasted, and others will always have access to our yummy frugal recipes. Just that month one in a shirley and Bob house might not be able to have them. But there are people in the UK who need cheap meals, and there are people in the UK and my DH is one of them who just isn't going to believe in the importance of omegas enough to ever eat fish, but that's ok, our recipes will be there for one and all

We don't have a 'sunday' roast every week. SOmetimes we have one on Saturday instead or sometimes not at all. I do try to make something 'nice' though. Kids have drama on Sunday evening, so Saturday is often more convenient. THey're not specially bothered, as long as they get fed.[SIZE=-1]"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. [QUOTE=MrsBartolozzi;30193297
Potatoes were deliberately removed from the list of valid f&v because it was thought that most Brits (or at least those most in need of nutritional advice IYSWIM) would rely on spuds/chips for their veg, and perhaps wouldn't see the need for including green veg and fruit.
Potatoes are rich in several vitamins and fibre, and in a varied diet with other f&v there is no reason not to include potatoes as a veg.

Wow! well done weezl et al!
On the subject of sunday roasts - we do have a roast dinner most weeks, although not always on Sunday. I prob cook a roast more now than in the past as rubber chicken is a regular part of my meal planning.
I think Sian makes a good point - it doesn't have to be a roast, but it's nice to give poor Bob what he might consider a "proper" dinner. I'm considering him a cliched male stereotype who might view chickpeas with a degree of suspicion, and be grateful to see a meal on his plate that he recognises!weaving through the chaos...0 -
Thanks Weezl,
Will make the pizza later or tomorrow night I'm looking forward to it!!
RE herbs- I think you are quite right in leaving out the essential store cupboard ingredients realistically Bob and Shirl will probably have at least some salt in so just give them a list of extras and they can get what they haven't got. Having moved about 6 times in the last three years (some to other countries) I always factor in stocking up on these in the first month as they are essential to many meals but last a long time.
Re Sunday Lunch-these are nice to have (im not that keen to be honest) but we must remember that the Sunday Roast used to be important because it was the one day the family got a decent meal with meat and veg and when the master would treat his servants for their work all week. Nowadays and in this meal planner the family have big meals every day and so imo the roast is a luxury and more of a tradition than a necessary part of life.
Any whoo just my musings on the matter (this is much more interesting than my research lol )

On the spices front- IF anyone has a B&M's near to you- they are stocking the large Shwartz Chef's spices at 99p. I just picked up a large Garam Masala and a general curry one at the weekend.
The weights are 330g.
A billy bargain:money:
We will be having a go at most of the recipes over the month and are testing out the making of bread on a daily basis at the moment. As i work all over the place. If only i could get them to stop scoffing it we would be on a winner:D:rotfl:Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?
Still lurking around with a hope of some salvation:cool:0 -
Can I just check is this because people believe the lack of sunday roast is too much deprivation for anyone in the UK? I think I am a bit naive, and I know you all have lots more access to other people's real life thoughts.
Not a Brit, but I do live with one, and while we certainly do like a nice roast dinner on our free Sundays (which are more regular now I do not work weekends any longer), I have served my (British) better half stuff such as pies (that were barely on nodding acquaintance to meat), meat loaf, toad in the hole, Mrs M's sausagemeat roll, with no complaints - as long as the roasties are crispy and gravy plentiful !
Oh, and I would be happy to test the new improved risi e bisi, but I am hardly an impartial tester there, so I do hope someone else joins in - else the lack of interest does not really bode well at all for the survival of my little contribution, innitRegarding the lack of vitamin C in the dish - once our Shirl is growing her own herbs (and Bob is off fishing ), that parsley on the top is gonna go a long way towards rectifying that - Just 2 tbsp of parsley contain about 20% of vitamin C RDA, I believe.
