Been thinking about this here condiments, salt, pepper, herbs and spices issue.
If it were me, I would be tempted to exclude them altogether, and say something along the lines of:
You probably have some basic flavourings and condiments in your kitchen already, so these are excluded from the menu plan. The plan uses the following items, which will cost you an additional £X if you do not already have them on hand.
(And then list them, with the individual prices.)

But I would give them the choice of large or small salt. Personally, whatever the cost savings, I wouldn't buy 3 kg of salt because I have nowhere to store it.

Ditto. For instance, my grocery bill will be slightly higher next month b/c for some reason, I have a lot of spices/herbs that need replacing - but that's not a "normal" month IYSWIM. Similar to the loaf tin issue, I see really basic things like salt & pepper to be more kitchen supplies than "food". I mean, is there honestly a family out there that doesn't have salt & a least some kind of dried green herbs in their kitchen? :o

I know it doesn't help with Calcium Gate, but if I had to eat porridge 5 days a week, I might rebel. :lipsrseal

Every time I see this, I think it says "sleeping tablet"! :-)

brilliant idea - slip Bob a sleeping pill so he'll sleep all weekend and won't miss his roast dinner! sorry...not very helpful :o

seriously impressed that people are managing to shave money off the shopping list - even if it's just a little here and there. well done guys!

    Hi Everyone

    Great thread!

Was wondering if Shirley would mind shopping around a little bit? Looking at the list some of the items are cheaper in Liddl for instance. Would be happy to check if that helped at all?
I know that she wouldn't want to trail around every supermarket, but maybe 2 or three during the month?

Yep, it totally is a calcium issue.:o:)

I don't mind offering an alternative though, because we can fortify the bread with milk powder and have toast as another breakfast option.

We'll probably include that later on....

could anyone check this linkie and maybe do the costings and nutrition for this version of the pancakes?

  • Are we definitely, definitely sticking to the £100?
I realise that may be a very annoying question.

  • Just peeking in so I dont loose track...Some savings could be shaved by using other stores..ie pilchards and sundried toms on offer at homebargains...was very chuffed that I managed to get sommat cheaper than Weezl (possibly first and last time ever lol!).
    Keep up the good work...
Sian dont eat too many figs!! Unless u want the "detox" effect!!
Re the 100...could Shirley not get some condiments at the start of the challenge and then count from then on? I realise that some will feel this is cheating but also want shirl to feel a success and carry on?

Have only had time to do a brief catch-up this morning and am on my way out soon, but smething came to mind:

How about reducing the shopping list to 2x chickens? One week the scrapings from the chicken could be used to make a pie bulked out with whatever veg is available (maybe bacon or rendering the bacon fat t make the saucey filling for extra meaty flavour)for the next Sunday dinner?
Love and compassion to all x

I'm sorry to impart more doom and gloom but are you aware that SP raisins are coated in trans fat? (partially hydrogenated vegetable oil) As 4KG raisins being used per month it might be significant.
Ingredients Seedless Raisins (99%), Glaze (Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil).
