but then - as we know - 5 a day is a very minimal amount indeed.
:oCeridwen you've done lots more research on healthy eating than me:D, so I trust your opinion. I just wondered if you'd say a bit more about why 5 a day is minimal if it provides all the vitamins minerals antioxidants and phytochemicals?

Genuine question, I haven't read before that 5 a day is an inadequate diet, so would really like to know :)

no, you're very welcome to try! Didn't mean to stall you, just been sitting with the numbers for nearly 3 weeks now, and felt that calcium and the omegas could be a real deal breaker, and the only work round I can think of is the raw oil plus no chicken route.

Still a bit worried about where the protein comes back from if we axe 4 whole chickens tooo!

  • it's only 25p difference, and I don't know if they are good for making weetabix cake, but have you considered these

only 75p for a pack of 36. 13.6p per 100g. I thinkk they may be slightly smaller than the Asda weetabix.

Well - personally I'm taking the viewpoint of pretty much any Government - rather than the British one - as to what we need.

If other European countries and America (I believe) have done their research and come to a 7-9 a day conclusion and it only seems to be the BRITISH Government that is coming up with such a meagre figure (of 5) - then I'm taking the majority view. As I understand it - even the British Government thinks it SHOULD be more than 5-a-day but believed it would be difficult to get the British people to spend on buying more than that. In their position - I would have told-it-is-like-it-is to the British people and told them what they need to have - but perhaps a "pragmatist" in the group persuaded them that its all anyone can do to get most British people to eat remotely healthily - so settle for five.

...hmmm...goes off remembering the point someone made the other day that the British Government gives us all loads of "how-to-live our lives" advice on a lot of topics - but on THE most important issue of all there is a total resounding complete and utter silence from them...but we'll leave a talk on that to some other thread on some other Board...its too early in the morning for my blood pressure to start rising....:rotfl:

Havent time for more countries for now - otherwise would be looking up German/French/Swedish et al to see what they say....

I think 5 British portions is more than the USDA american advice. They'd be happy with Bob having 3 cups chopped toms, and will also count potatoes, which the British Govt excluded and called a carb.

We can easily meet the american food pyramid requirements.

What other European countries shall I look at?

Hi, I'm a bit worried I offended you earlier, I'm sorry if I did, I was typing in a rush and didn't put as many smileys in so I hope that didn't sound brusque.

I truly appreciate all the offers of help I'm getting, and any disinclination is only about trying to spare someone else the bother of flogging a dead horse!

    HTH :)

Austrailian guidelines. They recommend 3 fruit per day and 4 vegetable, although do include potatoes in that. Haven't got time to delve deeper at the moment :)
