I thought something about you sounded familiar Tarquin GL. Yet another political, lecturing, point scoring post! Someone commented on an piece on Slugger recently making all the same points only [STRIKE]you[/STRIKE] they call [STRIKE]yourself[/STRIKE] themselves Pace Parent on there.

You are PaceNI back with a new User name, aren't you? You can tell us! ;)

OMG Golden Anemone - well spotted :T. Better still, click on where the Pace Parent name comes up on the Slugger site:D and you have his personal e-mail!! :rotfl:
  • So does that mean he will be getting into school at 8:00?? (seems a bit early ) My son got 102 on test and Mr Dickson told me that he should have no problem getting place at BRA so I would say its a given that your son will get in!!

I find it strange that parents on this site have contacted principles?teachers at school and have been virtually guaranteed that their child will get a place at a particular school?? Surely until the schools know the number of applicants etc this is impossible and irresponsible??

Hi Newtownabbey mum, sorry you find it strange, but it is however very much true. I was told by Mr Dickson after his speech that my son SHOULD have no problem getting in with his mark of 102. He said that he expected that the cut off for BRA would be around 99. He did not guarantee it but by him saying that he should have no problem, I am fairly confident. Also, since they accepted all their B2s last year I would have been fairly sure he'd get a place anyway!! Larne grammar principle also told me that he would 'be absolutely amazed' if my son did not get in with his mark (his exact words). Belfast High have told me they believe 102 to be strong B1 bordering on low A based on their own calculations that they have done. Belfast High also said that my son would stand a very good chance of getting in. If you were to contact these schools yourself and ask, I am sure you would be told the same thing! I am assuming that in order for these principles to make these remarks they must be quite confident that my son's mark is high enough, otherwise it indeed would be irresponsible and misleading.:)

Still no news on the GL Assessment specification. All this chatter about age standardised scores and the formula for working it out ignore the rather obvious fact that the GL assessment tests were taken on the same day (the pupil remains the same age on that day) versus the AQE tests which were taken over three days weeks apart (necessitating a sophisticated algorithm) Perhaps all those having a dig at the AQE test will explain (a) why they did not point out this rather obvious fact and (b) what their handy dandy formula for working it out might look like. Do you think that the GL Assessment decision to offer the two tests on the same day might have had something to do with the convenience of reading off age-standardised scores from a table? Just a thought folks.
This one test that the resident gurus talk about must be wonderful. I wonder if it will be anything like the Minister's test based upon the revised curriculum which she shelved last year after spending £185,0000 on it. Perhaps GL Assessment were involved in that exercise too.
As to the "FREE" GL tests. Any idea who paid GL Assessment? I would really like to thank such a generous benefactor, you know - shake their hand, get my photo taken with them, nominate them for a professorship at QUB School of Education. Hey - when there is just one test that will be twice the bill- twice the influence of those kind PPC people. I love Trojans bearing gifts.
As to the transport arrangements to Larne, Belfast High, Carrick or BRA I suggest that you apply to an Irish medium or integrated grammar and everyone can get a taxi

    Seriously, who really cares?????

Great news, got our remark in the post today and my sons score has increased by 2 points - probably won't mean a pile of difference in getting him into grammar school but he is happier so I'm glad I requested the remark.

Really didn't expect it to change at all based on the detail we received on the marking system with the original result - just goes to show!!!

Going to see headmaster to make sure the remark score now goes with his application wherever it may be now!!

Anyone else out there ask for a remark?
  • That is brilliant Stanjnr. :T :T

Here goes with a forum full of people wishing they had applied for a remark.

Stanjnr:- :T Fabulous!! great news!!! Does that move him up a quintile?
  • OMG Stanjnr, soooooo pleased for you. Thats fantastic!!!! I was tempted but didn't want to take the chance that mark might of gone down. Good for you for being brave. Doesn't really inspire much confidence in accuracy of marking scheme does it though?? Wonder how many others have gone up. Congrats again and hopefully it will improve your chances!!!:T

We had nothing to lose in asking for a remark. The increase just took us further up the 4th quintile, hence me still thinking we are heading for the high school, but who knows!!
  • Dont know what area you are from but one of the principles in East Antrim stated during his open night speech that scores of 85 would be in with a good chance :)
