  • I assume it makes her a middle of the road candidate. :rotfl: The most extreme examples are that there are kids who will turn 11 on 30 June this year whereas in the same class there are kids who will turn 12 on 8 July. So in essence 1 child is a year older than the other.
  • :(hi everyone, yesterday i was really happy with our score of 99 , but from reading some of the threads today , i am a bit worried again . someone said they heard methody was only looking at the first 2 and half of the groups ,:ooh panic panic . someone help.
  • Nobody really knows what any of the schools are looking at as they themselves don't know who will apply. Methody could end up with 240 kids from quintile 1 or they could end up with 240 spread across all 5 quintiles. No-one knows and no-one will know until the whole process is complete.
  • Good afternoon Ex-spendaholic and Tinkerbell :) Tinkerbell, am I right that Methody accepted B1s in previous years and a few B2s? If so, I would say your daughter has a very good chance!!
  • thankyou kingston and ex spendaholic :j it is all getting so confusing , maybe next month we will have learned a bit more xx

so does that mean that she would not have got any extra marks then?

Ex-spendaholic is right, nobody really knows BUT to me the only thing we can do is look at previous three year intake stats, look at what AQE is saying score is equivalent to and judge from that. Saying that I have been told by two different grammar school principles in our area that the quintile stats that AQE published are pessimistic and that this was done purposely, to err on the side of caution so that people wouldn't be disappointed. The principles both told me this over the phone and when I questioned it they were very firm about it. I have to believe there is some truth in it so I'm hoping that we all may get a nice surprise in that our actual scores may equate to higher old grades than what aqe have stated.
  • I know it clutching at straws and remaining upbeat for the kids.

I know Methody is 240 places. This is their results over the last 3 years:

2007 - they went down as far as Ds - this was a bad year for them a they had a new Principal Mrs Galloway and their popularity was hit as she rocked the boat.
    2008 - 200 As, 23 B1s, 12 on special provisions and 5 boarders
    2009 - 187 As, 25 B1s, 15 B2s, 14 on special provisions and 1 boarder..

this is their intake breakdown over the last 3 years......
  • Why are so many people trying to knock younger kids who did well in the test? My daughter is a spring birthday and she did do well but to be honest she has sat at the top of her class for the last 3 years and her principle predicted an A even before the tests. If I thought another child told her she only got a good result because of her age, after hearing that from their parents I would not be impressed. I think this line of thought needs to be investigated through the proper channels before parents start blaming the marking system for poor results. Sorry if I sound over protective but these are children we are talking about.

    Hi there,
been reading the forum since the results first came out, thought it was about time I added to it.

I've been emailing the AQE office for some answers, my son's score was not as high as we had expected, he is an August birthday, and looks like he is set for the local high school, its been difficult getting over the disappointment of the score but think he his ok (well certainly not showing it), and once I completed his form I felt we had to move on. I'd asked the AQE office to share his raw scores with me to be able to make sense of the mark he received and if they could also give me the calculation for the standardised score - I was shocked at the answer I received.

Extract from email reply from AQE office:-
The formula for converting from raw scores to the age standardised one is a
large, complicated one - which I don't understand and wouldn't be able to
send to you. But it is highly sophisticated and very accurate. It was
applied to each of the assessments separately, before the best two scores
    were taken.

What confidence can you take from that statement that its accurate!!!

From the scores I have heard, there certainly seems to be a lot of younger children scoring the big scores, and the older children not doing so well.

Personally I don't agree with age standardisation, if they are going to do that they also have to make it fair across the sexes, girls are more advanced than boys at this stage in their lives. The children have all been at school for the same length of time so should be treated equally. I have a daughter coming up who has a July birthday so will have to do exceptionally well to beat the June birthdays!!! Don't know if I'd look on it any differently if I was at the young end of the school year!

Anyone else think older children have had a hard time in this exam?
I AGREE WITH YOU ABSOLUTELY. Younger children have done alot better in these tests. My son was doing really well in practice papers. Anybody I know who has 120 and above have been May and June birthdays. Are children given age standardised scores throughout their whole school life if so older children I believe will suffer.
