Are there many from your school putting Belfast High as first choice, I would imagine due to geographics there would be? We put Belfast High first, Carrick grammar second, BRA third and Larne Grammar 4th.

BRA is the most popular and then it seem Belfast high are the most popular choices at my daughters school. My daughter at Carnmoney primary so the location is good

Thanks. Fingers crossed but really you have nothing to worry about. Don't think principle of BRA would have said 102 would have no problem unless he was quite sure. xo

I haven't posted for a while. I have just read the threads and there are big issues emerging in addition to individual queries.

    1. AQE need to issue raw scores and the percentile ranking. The adjusted score alone isn't empowering parents to make informed decisions. This information was released by GL-what reason would AQE have not to issue this?
2.Age adjustment may have skewed results, if for example the information used in the statistical analysis used historical data then the validity must be in question. My sense is that age adjustment is usually norm referenced and we are dealing with a new test how has this information been obtained? This needs impartial statistical review not an inadequate AQE statement to a parent earlier, that the procedure was complex and accurate! I agree with adjustment but want clarification on its validity in this particular test.
3.P7 teacher, quoted in the Irish News , illustrates the damaging consequence of a score rather than a grade. BUT they have given us a score and therefore, this needs to be qualified with raw scores, percentiles and a direct answer to where the norm that allowed age adjustment actually came from.
    4. The information in the original postings from PACENI were really helpful about the relative level of difficulty of the 2 tests. I really think it is foolish to remove them or ban them from using this forum-at least put the info back on). p.s not a member
We need reassurance that these tests have actually selected the most able students. I hope another good journalist picks up on some of these issues.

i no, just have to wait until 28 may now. i think its becuase we dont really know what way the score are working this year where as last year an A grade propbably would have guaranteed a place. But BRA seems to be an excellent school.
  • Hello and welcome to the new people.

Stressed Mum, I hope what you have heard is right as my child is on 104 Q3 and Grosvenor is our first choice followed by Methody. :j

    Hi there,
been reading the forum since the results first came out, thought it was about time I added to it.

I've been emailing the AQE office for some answers, my son's score was not as high as we had expected, he is an August birthday, and looks like he is set for the local high school, its been difficult getting over the disappointment of the score but think he his ok (well certainly not showing it), and once I completed his form I felt we had to move on. I'd asked the AQE office to share his raw scores with me to be able to make sense of the mark he received and if they could also give me the calculation for the standardised score - I was shocked at the answer I received.

Extract from email reply from AQE office:-
The formula for converting from raw scores to the age standardised one is a
large, complicated one - which I don't understand and wouldn't be able to
send to you. But it is highly sophisticated and very accurate. It was
applied to each of the assessments separately, before the best two scores
    were taken.

What confidence can you take from that statement that its accurate!!!

From the scores I have heard, there certainly seems to be a lot of younger children scoring the big scores, and the older children not doing so well.

Personally I don't agree with age standardisation, if they are going to do that they also have to make it fair across the sexes, girls are more advanced than boys at this stage in their lives. The children have all been at school for the same length of time so should be treated equally. I have a daughter coming up who has a July birthday so will have to do exceptionally well to beat the June birthdays!!! Don't know if I'd look on it any differently if I was at the young end of the school year!

Anyone else think older children have had a hard time in this exam?

my daughterd birthday is in January. does that make her younger or older candidate??
