    Hi and welcome Madmags
I feel very angry on your behalf at your Principal. Why was he/she giving that sort of advice? He should have been telling you to put all the Grammars down in order of preference. The Principal of our school was useless too and sadly many people listened to him and have kids now going to Inst. Nothing wrong with Inst but these kids are on the doorstep of Grosvenor and their parents would have liked them to go there but by listening to the Principal felt they had no chance and put Inst as first choice.
I don't blame thr principal as much as I blame myself and my OH. We both heard the principal of Grovsnor and both read the letter. at the end of the day it was Our choice which schools we put on the form:mad: I have to live with the fact that I did not go with my gut instinct...
What is really bothering me now is tha school my son is going to. It was the best of a bad bunch. The figures for the Key stage 3 at the end of year 10 are awful. In maths, only 35 % got a level 5 or above. What had happened to the other 65%. Talking to the teacher my son is expected to walk out of primary school with a level 5 in maths......
This is why it is going to be my mission to torture both Grosvenor and Wellington after the beginning of September. I don't care if people think I am mad. I want my child to get the best education and I believe that is in a grammar school:(

Don't wait until September. Get on the job now. Mr Peel (VP in Grosvenor) and Mr Agnew (VP in Wellington) are both really nice to talk to. I don't know what the situation is with either school (whether they are oversubscribed or whatever) but I would be seeing about the possibility of going on a waiting list. What about Inst?

Ex-Spendaholic.... I've already got the ball moving in Wellington and I will call into Grosvenor on Friday....
Inst is out of the question for us, we wouldn't be in a financial position to fund the Fee's.
If the worst comes to the worst I'm sure my son will do ok... He's a quiet, hardworking child who loves to learn, Maths, Science, and Art are his favourite subjects. We will be behind him every step of the way, pushing him on, sorry, encourging him.:)

I am so sorry you are in this position, I really hope you can get your son in to Grosvenor - keep trying. ((((hugs)))))) Either way, he will get there because he has your backing.

    Whatever happened to parental choice!!

My nearest grammar was Wallace High my daughter did not want to go there was very sure of that, Hunterhouse was our preference it is the right school for my daughter. Because we could not put Wallace down as she may have got in we had to forfeit our right to a bus pass so hey that is going to cost us approx £40.00 per month for the next 5-7 years! I dont mind paying because it is the right thing for her but how unfair!!!!! If she had have scored lower? we could have been rejected from Wallace and got the bus pass we couldnt take the chance!

I work part time and my husband isnt a high earner, but we dont get school meals - getting my daughter into grammar is not an easy option for us!!!

But I am happy that this is where she is going we will manage!!!!:rotfl:

I know, this is so unfair and it's likely to catch a lot of folk unaware!!

We are fortunate that there are no schools at all within 3 miles of our home, so our first choice should incur no travel costs.
Just out of interest, how does the NEELB work all this out? - Do they look at each and every form (ST2/TR) that comes in? They would then need to look at every transport application and match that with school selections on transfer form to ensure that there was not a school within 3 miles (that was not on transfer form) -If there was a suitable school within the 3 miles, you would have to pay transport costs (unless of course you applied to that school and were unsuccessfull) Hope that makes sense!!

Also on the form (section 7) it mentions travel options such as ulsterbus, rail etc. Can you tick more than one option (our child may want to use rail on rare occassions as well as the School bus) - I thought the form was not very helpful at all in explaining the options available. I know a school bus passes our way, and I think it goes to Carrick!!

Oh WOW - have been keeping eye on forum but just back from hols and have pages and pages to catch up on!
Well done to all the kids who got their first choices - mine got hers and is off to Glenlola (have heard of girl who got in with 94 if its any help).
BAD news - my friend's child got NO school and is devastated - Mrs Ruane you have a lot to answer to! My friend followed your 'guidelines' and her child didnt sit any tests and what has happened - no local school will take her and she has been offered schools in Belfast, Saintfield and Lisburn!

    Hi E1

I hope you don't mind me posting on here, I have not posted on this thread before. I am a mother of a p6 child and I have been reading these pages with interest. We live in Ards and I have seen Regent mentioned, but does anyone on here know what the cut off was for

    Strathearn
    Bloomfield
    Glenlola
I know it may change next year but it just gives me an idea of what we are aiming at perhaps.

Well done to all those who go there first choice school.:T

Regents cut off seems to have been 102. Know 1 child who got into Strathearn with 113, but don't know cut off. Glenlola cut off was 90.
    Hope this helps

Does anyone know of any child getting into Regent with 102?

This seems to have been the score that criteria had to be applied to choose who got in and who didn't.

The form actually asks you to name the nearest school, you then have to forward it to your new principal to sign off, I couldnt not put down the name of the nearest school.

I didnt look in the transfer booklet, maybe there is more information in that regarding other forms of transport, but you would imagine that you should be able to use any translink service?

How harder could our department of education make things!
