  • Well today we went out and purchased nearly all of the items on the BHS list apart from the uniform. Got son the recommended dictionary, bible, atlas, geometry set, ruler, scientific calculator, various specific pencils required for design, art and physics...all very specific!! Also got him Nike trainers for PE and PE socks. Tomorrow, if Gordon's is open, we are going to venture down to purchase the uniform. I know it is early but my usual pattern is to leave it til the last minute and then I'm always in a panic and also Gordons will let you exchange for bigger size if required in Aug. Can't wait to see uniform on him. It is the day we have been dreaming of for so long!!! Now, I need advice re school bag. What bag are all of you thinking of purchasing? At the moment, son uses big navy backpack I got out of Woodsides. There is nothing wrong with it but he could use a new one. I just know that he will get to school in sept and they will all be carrying some sort of trendy brand name bag and then I will inevitably end up having to purchase one therefore I would rather find out now and get the right one to begin with. Also, what overcoat do you all plan on buying? Son currently wears his superdry windcheater to school but as you will all know, they are quite neat fitting and there is no way that its going to fit over the blazer. The uniform list just says any black or navy overcoat. There are navy winderbreaker/waterproof type ones in Gordon's that have the school name on but not sure how 'cool' this will be considered. Sales assistant at Gordons said they really need an overcoat as when the rain hits the wool blazers they shrink around 2 inches in sleeve length . A serious plus point here for the polyester Larne Grammar blazers lol!! Just wondered what the rest of you think. Next up....shoes...where will you be purchasing and what kind will you be getting ie.lace up, velcro, or slip on. I always buy out of clarkes but again, not sure how 'cool' these shoes will be and want to get the right ones. Somebody mentioned to me kickers shoes but I don't know how smart these will look. Clarkes have some dressier looking ones that are a slip on kind. I really need advice about these issues from all you lovely kind people on here.

Hi Kingston - The 10% off for uniform from Gordons, is that only until end July?

Also do you have to pay all up front to get the 10% discount or can you secure with a deposit?

Kingston, you are even more bonkers than I thought. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I need to psyche myself up for such a stationery buying trip. Every year I get stroked by the 2 kids. They insist on going into town and it involves WH Smith and Eason. Don't know what is wrong with Wyse Byse. I stand there whilst my now 7 year old produces useless Hello Kitty Pencils and HSM Pencils at £1.50 a piece which I know will last 5 minutes but am to week to say no. I buy them whilst also buying the red and black Staedtler pencils (all other pencils should be banned in my opinion). Then comes the pencil case I'm dragged from one shop to another until they find ridiculous looking pencil cases at £10 each. I always come out with £50+ of rubbish whilst muttering that I will acquire the refil pads and punched pockets etc in work (we have millions of these things and will never use them)

Schoolbags - I will await instruction from my son on this. I imagine it will be a trip to Cult for a Superdry one or if Converse do something he'll do that. He has a perfectly good Animal rucksack but wants something new. :rotfl: I'm not envisaging any change from £50.

Shoes - Now don't get me started on those. I've always bought Clarks. Its annual ritual spending 2 hours in there whilst getting totally p1ssed off with people who bring the grandparents and everyone to buy a pair of shoes and seem to commandeer 3 assistants whilst half of Belfast waits in a queue and my 2 year old tries on every shoe in the shop even though she isn't there for shoes in the first place. :rotfl: We always buy shoes which I don't think are very nice. They are velcro and there is never change from £40. Last year however it all changed. We bought Kickers in Barratts at £46. They were velcro ones as well. I'm imagining here Kingston that you suffer similar pains regarding laces as we do. My son wears converse boots and its an ordeal waiting on him putting them on so we never wanted such grief in the mornings. As for the Kickers they were well used as Kickers as the toes were kicked out of them by the end of week 1 and they looked rubbish from there on in. I have threatened trips to Shoezone and the likes. OH tells me that there is no way a child can go to "big school" in anything but lace ups. Time will tell on that one.

Coat - That will be an interesting one. Anything that fits the description of overcoat, anorak or anything like it will be so unacceptable to my son. He would sooner get soaked or freeze generally. He will try and shove the Superdry coat on over the blazer but we all know that ain't going to work. I am tempted to go and find a long black trench coat and pretend he has to wear it. :rotfl:

Grosvenor people, I was talking to a friend last night who already has a boy there. She buys the uniform in Gowdys. She said they do a deal of a blazer, badge, tie, trousers and 3 shirts for £100. She said you can pay a few quid extra for the better trousers and blazer. The PE uniform is an unknown quantity at the minute as Grosvenor are just unveiling a new one which all kids have to have for 2011 and it is only sold in the school.

I need to get my act together. My son went on his school trip this morning. He had to be dropped off at 0345. Daughter is off for the bank holiday (they've never had this day off before, its a conspiracy) and of course the 2 year old menace is here.

Once the military operation is complete of getting them washed, dressed and fed we are off to new Grosvenor. :j :j I've the forms filled in along with the birth cert, medical card and TV Licence. I'm glad the TV licence came last week as I didn't really want to show a bank statement.

I'm really looking forward to seeing, touching and smelling new Grosvenor. I will maybe even meet the lovely VP who was so so helpful every time I rang him in a panic. He'll be glad he is moving on at the end of June. :rotfl:

I then need to come up with a masterplan of how to entertain these kids all day. Sometimes its easier to be at work. :rotfl:
