I shall keep subtly working on Mr LW - it's the only area we disagree on; and he pays for the tv, so I can't take too much of a moral high ground.

Fwiw, when the Sky box died a few months back and we had to wait for it to be replaced, we did try Sky Go on the pc; we could find the programmes Mr LW likes to watch, but it was awful from my point of view because there are no subtitles available.

subtitles are available on all the iplayer stuff as far as I can tell.. I often have them on so I can turn the volume down.. I struggle to hear it to just read along.. I don't have hearing loss.. I am adamant about it :p

  • We haven't had a TV for a few years. It's nice and peaceful. :)

I posted on this thread in May last year, but I'll post again. Still no tele, haven't had one for about 15 years at a guess, could be more. Life is great without a tele.

  • I haven't got a telly and have only just seen this thread! I haven't owned a TV since my first year of uni (but lived with people who did). I don't have any real need for one as I have an ipad to catch up on stuff. I am only 22 and just out of uni and people seem shocked that I don't have a TV!

can you not have a tv license and watch tv on your laptop aslong as its not live ?? and get away with it?

Yes. Just inform them that you no longer need a TV license as you never watch live TV from any device in your home. This is what we did and they were fine. They told us that they would write to us every 2 years just to check that we are still not needing a licence.

I haven't had a TV for about three years now. I don't miss it. I can't afford the licence and would rather spend the money on broadband! I do occasionally listen to the radio. But mainly I live my life in blissful silence!

  • My partner and I are both early twenties and we made the decision that when we moved into our flat (over a year ago) we wouldn't buy a TV (or TV licence).

We honestly haven't missed having one at all - we do usually watch a programme or two each night on catch up (or occasionally we buy a month of netflix if there's nothing to watch), but it's watched when it suits us and after it's finished there's no temptation to channel surf and "see if there's anything on".

Had unwittingly paid licence fee for several years, even when digital changeover made reception a non-starter here.

I'm unbothered. Occasional bits of catch-up, but like many others, can't be without t'Wireless, everywhere, DAB, and LW for French listening.

Heard and read this morning about UK notspots for connectivity. This bit of Fens is one and confirms years of [worsening]slows, drops, no-goes for phones and putahs.

In case this thread becomes a competition about who has been TV Free the longest, I wish to claim First Prize for my 70 years of TV Freeness!
We usually have a TV on holiday but have not been tempted to buy one,
Posters seem to be hinting at what we've always thought - that much of the time TV programmes don't really need the pictures. Like that often-quoted little boy said a long time ago, the pictures are better on radio!
Newly TV Free people should be thankful that the Licence agency have calmed down now so you won't be sent their nasty and threatening letters - I took one of them straight to the Police!
