Is anyone else telly-free?

I gave up with TV years ago, such a waste of time and money. I watch a few odd programmes on the computer catch ups, but if I miss them I'm not bothered, plenty more hobbies to keep me busy.

Has anyone else done this and successfully lived without their telly? I do remember doing this about 20 years ago for a year and that was probably the most productive year of my life!
I've added your thread to our existing on living without a television where you will see other opinions.

I've just spend a very pleasant hour reading all your opinions on going without tv. Loved the idea of "Baroque around the Clock" posted by Primrose. I found the station and now have it saved to favourites. I am going to start writing a tv free diary to record all the things I'm doing instead of watching tv.
It's good to know that I'm not going to be alone in going telly free;)Flowers are sunshine for the soul0 -
I wish i could kick the tv habit. i waste so much time sitting up to silly oclock watching it.
i will one day, knowing so many here can be tv free is inspirational.0 -
I borrowed (in true OS manner) a book from the library called Remotely Controlled - how television is damaging our lives and what we can do about it The author is Dr Aric Sigman and it makes a brilliant but scary read. He draws on many fascinating experiments and case studies, one of my favourites is where male monkeys will willingly give up their favourite cherry juice in order to watch images of female monkeys' hind quarters
I think if any loving parent read it they would be dragging their children away from the telly and taking a sledge hammer to it without a moment's hesitation.
BTW After a couple of tv free days I've already finished a couple of craft projects that have been lying around for yonks:)Flowers are sunshine for the soul0 -
Yes!
And do you know what, do not miss it one iota0 -
No, and I cannot see that happening. We have 6 tv sets. One in every main room and x1 spare.
The tv's are on and off at diffrent times by diffrent people.
I do object to husband paying for the all in tv package with Virgin. I think we should make do with free view.
It is all because he wants to watch one channel = sky sports news. The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)0 -
I now by and large avoid watching daytime TV but when I do I seem to be swept along by it into the evening schedule with all the sensationalism and bias, bar programmes worth watching.#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.
Reading whatever books I want to the rescue!:money::beer[/B

We own TVs and use them for watcing DVDs, the Wii etc, but we haven't watched broadcast TV for over 6 years. Our eldest two children (aged 18 and 15) have both said how much they dislike going to peoples houses when the TV is on as they find it distracting and that the adverts can get overwhelming - if we visit someone and their TV is on, it does grab the younger childrens attention at first, but they quickly get bored and wonder off.
Before we got rid of the licence, I would have the TV on in the background morning, noon and night - that constant noise would drive me insane now! I don't miss TV at all!0 -
Got rid of our telly 2 years ago. Can honestly say we do not miss it in the least. I got absolutely sick of stupid people coming into my sitting room every evening, insulting my intelligence, shouting and carrying on like they were the most important people in the world... and that was just the adverts! Seriously, I cannot believe how much of my life I wasted in front of the telly, the nightly up and down the remote control desperate to find SOMETHING to watch and settling for a repeat you have already seen 5 times.
I'm sure all this has been said already (I've only just come back onto site after absence of couple of years.) We have become even more OS and MSE in the meantime, lots of veg growing, preserving, wine and beer making, knitting for Christmas etc. and generally not spending anything if we can help it. We also ditched the car but we live on bus routes and have both got our passes now, but that is another story!
I would urge everyone to ditch it. You will miss it for a fortnight. After that you will wonder why you have wasted so much of your life! Give it a go. x0
