I live abroad and telly here is pretty awful. Dubbed versions of American crime serials and rubbish films from the 80s, plus the reception is terrible. I make do with BBC radio and Iplayer plus old films on Youtube, and the occasional English language dvd I find in the second hand shops here. Getting a kindle has been fantastic too as I read far more than I ever did. I honestly wouldn't bother with a telly now even if I lived in the UK.

PS - remember that TV's principal purpose is to get you to spend money! If you think of tv programmes as just fillers to keep the adverts apart, it all starts to look different. Even the supposedly non commercial BBC constantly pushes its own 'brand'.

I have hardly watched TV for years and once out of the habit found that I could live without. I bought a new TV just in case I could not afford one in the future but it is still in it's box. Lately, I have watched some TV via the internet but I still could manage. I do like the radio though.

My eyes are a problem so that puts me off watching tv too and though I type on forums, even using the PC is troublesome. I tend to use it more as you would a Hi-FI and listen to radio or music using it so once I set something away I am not looking at the screen that much.

If I have to I tend to walk away and come back occasionally.

  • I would limit TV to the absolute minimum. Use it for vital programmes, skip the ads and just concentrate on the lovely internet. I would however love a large screen internet enabled tv but not a telescreen as spoken about by Orwell so I could watch youtube videos on large screen but avoiding the ads.

  • It's so easy to become innured to endless repeats, the ads, the dreadful ads!!! you know the stuff they can't even give away! and not go for the fresh stuff. I much prefer to have internet radio, internet activities with a little tv as appropriate and of courseH skipping the ads as i don't see why I should be subjected to these nasty things any more than i am forced too.

  • If I lived in a remote part of the Scottish Highlands I would use every available means to give myself a good connection and also take advantage of the scenery for long walks and the nature stuff Scotland is so abundant off.

I have a 20" monitor attached to my laptop, mainly used for work but I also watch youtube films on it. I connect my computer to the hifi also to get good quality stereo sound. The screen cost about £60, but you would recoup this after a few months from saving on the licence fee if you gave up telly.

  • We have a Black and White TV with freeview box and use this for Bargain Hunt at lunchtimes (we work from home) and maybe something in the evening. Anything we need colour for like sports we watch on iplayer etc. Costs us under £50 a year for our telly. Radio 4 or 4 extra most of the rest of the time.

I didn't have a TV after I left home at 18 until I got a little portable when I was 25. Still don't watch it much.

I like radio 2 in the mornings (and for the Confessions part of Simon Mayo's programme at 5.30!) but also listen to radio 4 - the Archers and most of the 6.30 comedies particularly I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue and Just a Minute. Also enjoying Mark Steele's in Town at the moment.

I do watch stuff on iplayer and am taking advantage of LoveFilm's free 3 month offer.

My favourite is I'm sorry I haven't a clue on R 4. I tend to listen to what ever is on, especially while I'm doing the big boring sewing orders, where I am on repetitive tasks. It's a good excuse to sit and listen to the radio.

I'm a R4 girl as well, sleep to it when dh is away! I like You and Yours, Money Box, Woman's hour amongst others.

I'm a new convert to "Sorry". I particularly like the Uxbridge English Dictionary round: just before Christmas - "Tinsel: Gretel's more flamboyant other brother"
  • We are semi t.v. free - we gave up our license a few months ago, however we are able to access bbc iplayer through our wii console so we still watch the odd film & documentary, we also watch box sets & films that we own

The one thing I'm going to really miss is Wimbledon (I may well spend 2wks camped out with friends & family)
