Davidboy wrote:What on earth are you talking about. If I honestly buy a product, I DO NOT expect it to set off any alarms. It happened to me at Virgin store, I bought a DVD, yes it set off the alarm, they are very quick to accuse and search your bags, when it was proven I HAD paid for it but the moron had not cancelled the TAG at the till, I let rip. I demanded to see the manager, and made a big rumpus, so much so that he gave me some money back to get rid of me. Yes great they have security measures, but I am blowed if I am going to be embarressed when I have paid for the item, I embarressed them instead.
If it happens at anyother store I will do the same. It is the shops fault for not training their staff properly, NOT the customers fault.

I used to work in Game, the security tags on the stuff they sell there are those little stick on white bars that you have to pass over a pad on the counter to deactivate. When they are deactivated the pad beeps to let you know. Sometimes the pad would beep but for what ever reason it hadn't properly deactivated the security tag.....I believe that virgin have a similar security system. How is is the fault of the SA if the security technology sometimes doesn't work as it should. I didn't realise that if you worked behind a counter you suddenly were expected to have some kind of psychic powers to enable you to know if the tag really had been activated even though the machine told you it had been. It's very often NOT incompetence of the staff, it's a technology problem and screaming and shouting at the SA is out of order IMO.
As for accusing you and searching your bags, well sorry but I think you might just be a little over sensitive there. Because of the above problem just about every store who uses it realises that 99.9% of the time the customer has done nothing wrong...thieves don't stand still when the alarm sounds they run like hell. In all the years I've worked in retail I have never seen anyone be instantly accused or have their bags searched, a simple "oh dear it looks like the tag hasn't been deactivated, could you bring your item back to the counter so we can do if for you" is about the strongest comment I've ever heard. Most people know now to make their own way back, most people don't even give it a second thought these days.0 -
before you try to cut it off if ever,be sure it is not an ink tag-they will explode ink everywhere if you try to remove it.
I had a tag left on the other day,but it was a hard tag not the stick on ones.As we went out someone else was coming in and their tag had been left on,so we didnt realise the beeping was us-however the shop had just opened so put it down to inexperienced staff.0 -

Thats aload of tosh too. It so happens that behind every counter they have a detector that tells them whether the security has been disabled, but just can't be ar*ed to use it.
Scream and shout I will, get your business in order. Over sensitive maybe, I just get !!!!!! off when as an honest person you just go about your daily business without these things happening. There is no excuse no matter what you say.

Bull !!!!!!
Sorry but have you ever actually stepped behind a counter? This supposed device has never existed in any shop I've ever worked in.
You have NO idea what you are talking about.
I try really hard not to get personal on these boards but you really are talking out of your rear orifice now :mad:0 -

So true, they do not have a clue.
But what can you expect from this person. A person who instantly judges people as incompetent, due to a simple human error or an error beyong their control.
Davidboy, since when did anyone say it was the customers fault? However, you as the customer should not be so disgustingly rude and stuck up, with this "i'm better than you" type attitude.
People moaning about chavs... people like you are 10 times worse.0 -

If the cap fits mate!! Yes but no but yes but no but!!!!! (The Chav comment was about Westmidland Saffari Park, and I stand by that claim. It is a shocking place, trust me!)
I will fight my corner every time, I will not be walked over by anyone.
By way, neither of you know what you are talking about, when they took my DVD back to the counter they tested it against something that showed whether the tag was de-activated or not and it wasn't...thats fact!! Whether it was a mistake by the assistant, or a technical error, makes no difference I was greatly inconvenienced and embarressed for doing nothing wrong. So you say that is acceptable!!
By the way, thanks for the personal attacks. Against site objectives, we should be attacking shoddy work and rouge companies.
As a manager, I would not accept shoddy work, you are paid to do a job of work....do it, or move on.
For your information I have done many types or work over the years, including shop work many years ago, so yes I do know what I am talking about.
Both of you get a grip of reality, and get a life. Move on guys!!

Some reputable stores try to address the tag issue by keeping a log of which member of staff has left the security tag on,hard tags and the sticky ones.
Then if the same person is consistently featured, they will be spoken too.
What i seem to have noticed here is-
People who have been sales assistants think its fine for a tag to be left on.
People who are customers dont.
Do we really need this kind of stuff on this site-some of this is spiteful.
I think if you have had the expense of driving an extra journey to take it back its quite aceptable to ask for something for your trouble, after all if the alarm system had been working properly the op wouldnt now have this problem0 -
Don't know if this would work with modern tags but something similar happended to me a long time ago. Rather than traipse a .long way to the store I'd bought the goods from I wen to a local boutique I shopped in quite a bit, explained what had happened, showed them the receipt and they took it off for me. (It was a magnetic type tag).0

In a lot of areas of the country, school ends for the summer today.
Some of the above will probably have children that can behave better.
Everyone, do the rest of the membership of MSE a favour and give up with the childish bickering (this doesn't include those who posted sensibly).
Is there actually much of a money saving aspect here? It's an issue between the individual and the store.
Additionally, my username is similar to another poster....I am a totally different person who happens to have registered with a name very similar, so don't for a moment think I'm the same person registering with another name....I know some out there won't be able to help themselves judging by what's been posted above.0 -

Yes the device you are talking about is the very same device I was talking about, it's the pad that deactivates the security strip, it beeps when the strip has (supposedly) been deactivated. It's not there to be used as a testing device, it's a deactivation device and one the security strip has been passed over it and it has beeped then that's all a SA can do.
As for being greatly inconvenienced and embarrassed, I'm sorry but I really don't understand how returning to a counter for less than a minute can be classed as GREAT inconvenience.
I will apologise about about referring to you as talking out of your rear orifice though... it was out of line, as I say I try not to get personal but your post came across as abusive, insulting to sales assistants and somewhat arrogant. I read it at the end of a stressful day and should have known better than to reply when I was in the mood I was.0
