I disagree. Perhaps not up to a Dell Latitude but I'd rate much more highly than a Dell Inspiron.
When laptops sold for £3000 they could afford to build them well. But £300 doesn't allow a lot of margin for decent construction regardless of the manufacturer. Just look at the IBM R-series versus the T-series.

As far as build quality goes, Dell Inspiron > Acer Aspire.

I've held an Inspiron 1300 in one hand and an Aspire (something, celeron-m model) in the other, for as far as feeling robust goes, Dell wins hands down.

Protection that the lid provides on an Acer is questionable, just press the back of it whilst the machine is on and watch that screen ripple, Dell's screen doesnt shift at all.

(Obviously these things wont apply to higher end machines, I'm talking about £300-£500 stuff here)

And BTW - I'm not your typical Dell fanboy, it took a lot to make me purchase the Dell laptop I own, looked at ALL other alternatives first (even your Chinese made MEDION stuff!). Definately wouldnt buy a desktop from them.
  • Just been into my local tesco extra store in longton and managed to pick two of these up, one for my nephew and one for me! :j

Really impressed with it so far, the build quality is great and the screen looks nice and crisp. They told me theyre in very limited stock so good luck everyone else!

    Is it a 15.4 screen?

Well the store near my work which told me to come back on Thursday still don't have them. The CS girl could see it on the system but when she called the person in Electrical they only knew about the "normal" £399 one and didn't know about getting any £299 ones in.

    This is very frustrating!

Alison - have you had any feedback at all?

The customer service manager that I spoke to hasn't got back to me yet. I have been phoning a couple of places and have been told by one that they are due in a week on Wednesday. As soon as I hear anything I will post nej.

Tesco in Sunbury are selling the 3 laptops for £100 more than advertised in the catalog ie 399.92,549.94, 699.96.

They are definitely the same ones because my father checked the specs.

    What's going on?!

I think that's the normal price. My local store has an Acer for £399 as well.

Just had a call back from the customer services manager at head office. This is what he told me.

They are going to be selling 7,000 of these laptops in total across 270 stores. They are on sale at the moment in Scotland as they are about 3 weeks into their summer holidays and nearing returning to school but the back to school promotion doesn't start here until 5 August. He said when they are in store, they will be situated in the Power Aisle which is just as you go in through the doors. He told me to start phoning the stores at the end of July to see if they have got a date yet. He also told me that promotions usually start on a Saturday.

I spoke to a store this morning and they told me that they would be in a week on Wednesday which would be 2nd August.

    Hope that helps.
