Hi there - it's probably worth consideing pass plus.In case you haven't heard of it it is an extra package of six driving lessons covering night/bad weather/motorway driving so will cost c£100.Not only does it give your lad extra experience in real driving conditions but it means a discount of around 30% off the 1st years premium.Telephone the following as this is notquoted on line :-

    Norwich Union Direct (see below)
    Privilege
    Tesco
    Direct Line
    Motorquotedirect

One other suggestion is to include parents grannies and other mature relatives on the policy.Often this means a 10% saving.

A new online company who will quote decent prices for 17/18-y-o's is https://www.swiftcover.com.Get a price for TPFT and for comp with highest excess. The latter can be cheaper ! This higher excess works with Norwich Union Direct.

My sympathies, it's crazy money but the idea of insuring a car third party is a good one because it gets cheaper in subsequent years.;)

  • Thanks for help. Will check ideas out.
  • I have just got my insurance on my car. Most insurance company's were quoting me like £2700 and i was so annoyed, mainly because if i done the same quote but said i was female i got quoted half the price. In the end I got my insurance through Churchill they quoted me half the price of the other insuirance companys, it was the cheepest I found for myself a 17 year old give it ago.
  • i tried asda and they only quoted £379 but if i was to have an accident i would have to pay the first £600.

That is really good advice if you are a relatively new driver. I would say to all new drivers to try this tactic and offer to pay an inflated policy excess to lower your premiums. Not sure if all companies will do this but it's worth a try. It should encourage you all to drive safely as well. :)
  • I have an 18 year old son who was looking for insurance a while ago. Most companies/brokers were quoting anything from £1400 - £2800 on a low group car. He then enquired with Norwich Union but asked what it would be if he had pass plus and was quoted £800. To get a reasonable price insurance though you will need to have held the licence for at least 12 months.

Cherylbushell managed to get reasonably priced insurance due to the fact that she's female. Boys automatically attract higher premiums

    Would def. recommend Pass Plus
Doing a pass plus would have only saved me around £90 to £110 so i didnt bother doing it.
I currently pay £1250 for Third party fire and theft on a Vauxhall Corsa 1.5 turbo diesel, I used to pay £1200 for my Peugeot 106 1.4 Diesel.
    and im 20!
  • I'am a 17 year old girl learning to drive, but although can drive with a company can not drive the recommended 20 hours privatly in my own car, y? because i can not afford the insurance. this is my no fault of my own as I'am still in full time education at my local sixth form and so therefore do not have to time to have a full time job to save up any sort of money, I have a part time job but theres no way that i can save the sort of money I need working as many hours as I can. my cheapest quote so far has been from churchill at £722, i understand that I'am a young driver but surely there is some way to have a cheaper car insurance of at least be able to pay it monthly at my age some where. please some one help me I'm close to passing my test now so will need the insurance just to get around please help. many thanks
