The best quote I found was with Liverpool Victoria for my son at £980 third party only, insuring him in his own right. They wanted £1,800 to add him to my policy until the renewal date - 6 months away!! I do hear it's alot cheaper for girls though. Good Luck0

all helpful replies much appreciated !!!
Im 22 and live with my wife who is 18 - no kids YET!
wife recently passed her driving test and as a treat we are looking to upgrade the 1996 Astra for a 2000 5dr VW Golf TDi SE (110 bhp) for around £4000. we are both students but do work part time.
Now the insurance group on the VW is 6 which is not that bad but the quotes iv been getting are well in excess of £2000. As the main driver and my wife as an additional driver i honestly thought i could get insurance below the £1300 mark!
if anyone (in particular young couples on a tight budget) have managed to get a hot deal on there car insurance please can you tell me your ages, the car it was on, and how much it was, and most importantly who with.
please help!
thank you for reading my dilemma!0 -
I managed to get insurance on a group 14 car (Saxo VTS ... so well known for destroyed by boy racers my age) for about £1200 at the age of 22. Have you tried confused.com? Elephant.co.uk were the cheapest for me at the time, but the siutation may well have changed by now.
It may be worth getting quotes without the wife on the insurance. Insurance tends to be rated on the highest risk, so despite the fact you have a few years experience, insurers may be giving you quotes on the basis of an 18 year old who has only just passed their test.
Shop around (as I'm sure you can get cheaper) and hold off till the end of the month when insurerance salesmen are desperate to meet their targets and will give you extra discounts.

I'd highly recommend Bell.co.uk for drivers who do not have any no claims. Having spent a lot of time shopping around they came up cheapest for myself (22, Ford Ka 2005), my sister (19, Corsa, about 5yrs old) and also for my Dad, who although not a new driver has never had insurance in his own name before. They also offer an accelerated no claims scheme which means that you can buy 10months insurance (mine cost £600 approx in Leeds, an area where premiums are exceptionally high) and get a years no claims after just 10months, effectively being able to get 5 years no claims in just 4 years and 2 months.0

I think one of the reasons insuring young drivers as additional drivers on a parent's policy is so expensive is that insurance companies are well aware that it's common practice to insure a car in a parent's name when the younger driver is really the main driver. It could be argued that if both drivers use the car fairly regularly then it's a matter of choice which should be named as the main driver, but if the parent does not drive that car at all (as was the case with a 17-year-old driver I knew whose car, given to her by her mother when she upgraded to a newer one, was still insured in her mother's name to save money) that's cheating a bit.0

No, it's not "cheating a bit". It's fraud which is a criminal offence and not clever!0

I also got my best quote from Admiral for my son who is 23 got his first provisional licence last week, on a Ford fiesta 1.3. A 1998 model for £864 fully comprehensive, with me as a named driver. The nearest I got to that was Kwik Fit at £1162, most of them were £1400 and Budget was £17000
