Young Drivers Car Insurance (2004-2005)

CIS
Not sure if it's still the case but my brother used CIS when he was a teen and they were the cheapest around at the time - might be worth having a look though.
I just changed my car insurance using freefivers to lloyds and got £70 cash back it was cheaper too :rotfl:0 -
Some insurers - not all - will give discount if he has done PassPlus.
But the reason insurance for young inexperienced drivers costs a lot is that they tend to have more accidents in the early days of driving! Someone's got to pay for it, and if it's not them, it's us more mature drivers!
Oh, and there was noise in the press in the last year about Norwich Union offering a pay as you drive insurance scheme which might work for him if he's the only driver of the car - can't see how it works if anyone else is going to drive it.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Norwich Union Direct was the cheapest for my 17yr old son a year ago. I too was getting silly prices ranging up to £4000.
I finally got a quote of £1650 for an Astra SXi 1600, 3 yrs old( fully comp) - this was based on him having Pass Plus. I've just renewed his policy and it's now down to under £8000 -
Norwich Union now not as cheap as last year but still worth trying and CIS have priced themselves out of the young drivers market.Would suggest https://www.dna-insurance.com.
At a guess they would charge around £1000 for TPFT on a Polo with Pass Plus discount in a country area.
Best of luck0 -
are you insuring him by himself - or as a named driver? If you are putting him as the main driver then it will probably be cheaper to put yourself down as a named driver. Also if you are putting YOURSELF as the main driver and him named when it is in fact his car you have to be really careful - I work in insurance and there is a bit of a crackdown at the minute on people "fronting" for their children. If he had an accident and it comes out that he is the main driver then the insurer's can choose not to indemnify. Its really quite obvious these days when fronting is going on and the insurance companies can choose to ask some probing questions. If however you're not doing that then there's no need to worry!
Definitely try putting yourself as a named driver - I've been told that you should try and get women over 50 on the policies which should bring the premium down - try anything!! I know it's really annoying - when my OH insured himself at first we had a 306 worth about £4500 and people were quoting £4K + madness. Another thought - will your son be doing big miles? We only use our car about 8K miles a year and this brings the premium down.DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY

Have a look at Tesco, because they have a BIG complusory excess for young drivers which brings the cost down. £400 quid I think.
Also try adding yourself as an addidtional driver as this will bring the price down with some companies. (Not Tesco, but try Elephant)
A 1.4 engine is a lot more expensive to insure than a 1.0. Try looking at the prices to insure an old Ford Fiesta, it might be worth getting a smaller car.0 -
directline were cheapest by a long way...£690 against £1300 elsewhere for a 17/18 year old girl just passed testEx forum ambassador

Hi just a quick note, a guy in A & E told me that VW Polo and Golf are cars that youngsters are going for and have most accidents in. He said they are equal to ford capris in 70's. So that could be why insurance is so high. I've just been refused insurance for my son for our car because engine is too big, although he's still a learner and wouldn't be in the car without me.0

elephant.co.uk were very good with me a couple of years back, I was 24 and had four accidents under my belt, 2 complete loss (none were my fault!!!!), they quoted me £590 for a 2l Seat (same as a golf GTi) against all other quotes I was getting around the £2k-£3k!
After them, try https://www.liverpoolvictoria.co.uk, they have also been good with quotes.
Luckily, I get a company car now, so now the complete car including Tax, Fuel, Maintenance etc only costs me about £200pm in tax!Treat others as you would like to be treated :A0 -
Has anyone got rough figures from when they put their son/daughter on their current car insurance what amount to expect in increase in premium. I've just rung current insurer (Direct Line and was quoted extra £147 at this point now, as insurance due for renewal mid-December) and to follow this through I presume this means an increase of approx £900/ extra £75 per month on my current annual premium which is only £280 approx on a Ford Fusion 2003 reg car !!!!
I know things do cost these days but I would appreciate any feedback from fellow MSE members that have or are currently putting their teenager on their car insurance.
Many Thanks, Skippy0
