Young Drivers Car Insurance (2004-2005)

My 17yr old son passed test and the quotes for insurance ranged from £1200 to £2800 for a 1.1 10 yr old metro-3rd party cover only.
Advice about the Pass Plus is right; with this he got third party cover with Norwich Union Direct for £662 whch was managable if still a huge sum for us oldies.
He benefits from driving as it has opened up where and when he works, and hopefully will benefit more quickly from insurance in his own name. You cannot avoid all accidents (clue in name) but he is under threat not to get a speeding ticket and knows if he comes off the road and wrecks the car (as some young drivers seem to do all to frequently ) he will have no car.0 -
Hi there,
Which? mag published a Best Buy guide for insurance a few months ago. For people 25-44, the following companies were best for phone quotes, and internet quotes, in a low, and high risk area, so choose the ones to suit where you live.
Low risk - Internet = Churchill, Direct Line, Egg, More Than.
Low risk - Phone = Direct Line, Hastings Direct, Budget, Post Office.
High risk - Internet = Churchill, First Alternative, Halifax, Direct Line
High rish - Phone = Hastings Direct, Help the Aged, Churchill, First Alternative
Get a quote from each company in either the low risk or high risk group depending on where you live.
Let us know what you find out!
Michael.
PS: I know your son isn't 25 and over, but give it a shot!Filiss0 -
hollie.weimeraner try Norwhich union now (february) special promotion to buy online 20% instead of 10%, i posted a thread a minute ago but dont know how to link, it may help (Cheapest car insurance TPFT for 21 year old)
My first insurance was Tesco, about £600 TPFT 1l Fiesta (aged 17)
Next was Norwich Union £500 same car
Then Haven Insurance £530 but for new car, bigger engine 1.4l Fiesta
about £100 excess on all of them (not including young drivers compulsary excess)
It pays to be the named driver in the end, 4 years on and my insurance has more than halved, and thats with a bigger engine.
Hope this helps

Hi, I hate to repeat the pass plus thing, but it really should save you money. I'm 20 and got my own car last year, and needed insurance in my name. Because I had done pass plus Norwich Union gave me a huge discount, making them a lot cheaper than anyone else. I used the Norwich Union website, and still got the pass plus discount.
An important point to note is, if your son can do pass plus with his previous driving instructor, he may need less sessions, saving even more money. My instructor signed me off on most things, like driving in different weather, etc, as he had already seen me do them in the course of the lessons. This meant all I really had to do for pass plus was the motorway lesson.0 -
Hi hope someone can help, im 17 years old and have passed my test 2 months ago. I have just brought myself a 1.0 Vauxhall Corsa. Im having the insurance in my name to start getting my no claims (hopefully), i have also done my pass plus which reduces my insurance. One of the best quotes that i have recieved is from tesco which is £1244 and i get a 20% discount for having pass plus. There is only me and 1 other driver on the policy has anyone come across any cheaper than Tesco.
Thanks in advance

I've just got a quote to add my 17yr old daughter (learner driver) onto my Insurance, currently with Equity @£171pa but they wouldn't quote so brokers (Direct Choice) did a search and came up with Provident's 'lady Driver' @ £466.20pa, I thought £300 extra seemed a lot (well it is to me!) but reading posts on here now it seems quite a good deal.......?!Make the most of life, it is not a rehearsal!0

My 18 year old daughter tried lots and lots of online quotes for her 1.4 escort when she first passed her test and found tesco was far cheaper than anyone else (£668)0

2 years ago I came to add ny daughter (just 17 provisional licence etc) to my insurance (Frizzell then now London & Victoria) total cost for the remaining 3 months was £30 - yes thirty pounds - I was so astonished I got them to double check
When the annual renewal came in sure enough an extra £90 for the year.TANSTAAFL !0
