Sensible question to ask!
Most of the smallest engined cars are in low insurance groups, but not all of them ... things like 1.1 litre Citroen C2, Fiat Seicento, Vauxhall Corsa 1.0, Skoda Fabia 1.2 ... are all group 1 (depending on the specification).
There are actually very few cars in group 1 - 103 out of 32000+ on the ABI database - but the cost between group 1 and 2 won't necessarily be much.
Also note that some companies use their own groups rather than the ABI standard ones.
If you want to check which group your dream car falls into, you can look here and enter the make and model, or just sort the entire list by group - NB that the first few pages of entries are rubbish!
I've downloaded the entire database and if you want a list of just group 1 or group 2 cars, say, I can send it you - send me a pm.0 -
Too long to read the whole thread, but...
Pass Plus course only applies a benefit if insurance is directly in your name (e.g. not named driver).
Pick a cheap car, do low miles a year, etc. etc. etc.
Older cars will be perfect for the cheap bit, but also better for general driving too. It will have no ABS, traction control, power steering, or anything like that, making the driver right in there with the driving. It's the best time (and type of car) to gain experience in.
Just sit one afternoon and call a million companies.
I finally paid £780 for a £210 car doing 7k miles a year. Bargain I thought (was paying over £1k increase as named driver on mum's car). My policy also lets me driver other cars 3rd party as well, which is the best bit
All that's with Norwich Union Direct, and I do have Pass Plus.0 -
I wanted to add my daughter who was learning to drive to the wifes 1.6 astra. Axa direct our insurers would not quote and my employers were not "Lucky" to get my business in the staff scheme at £1780. Eventualy quoted £498 with Vauxhall insurance on line. Opted for the protected NCD
:oand paid approx £600 with £400 excess. I had to ring them to query the learner driver part, was quoted nearly £200 more than online but they eventualy matched the online price so it is worth haggling to get what you want. Certainly the cheapest deal I could find.

My son is 17 and has just passed his driving test at 1st attempt. He has some savings and wants to buy himself a car - trouble is insurance companies want approx £2,000 for insurance.
Can anyone point me in the direction of cheaper insurance?0 -
Obviously much will depend on type of car, area he lives, etc - but assuming a very basic car and not living in 'very wrong' area, £2000 sounds like it may be a couple of hundred quid over the top.
When looking around for motor insurance for a 17-year old family member, I found TESCO to be the cheapest!0 -
Yes insurance at 17 is very pricey but the 1st year is the killer.By the 2nd year with some NCD the price starts tumbling. Here are a few points to help keep the cost down :-
1- look at cars around 1 litre in insurance group 2-3
2- try cars 10-12 years old
3- investigate pass plus which involves 6 extra lessons covering night driving bad weather driving motorway driving etc.Various companies especially cis tesco privilege direct line norwich union quoteline direct give discounts averaging 35% for pass plus but not on their websites. You will need to telephone them.Pass plus have an informative website of their own.
4- a new and fairly similar scheme (max driver) is backed by the advanced motorists and guarantees a 25% discount on insurance.
5- quoteline direct also arrange six month policies which give a one year ncd after six months provided you take out a policy for the next 12 months with the same company. This eases the financial load but you are not able to change to another insurance company after six months.
Norwich union also offer 9 month policies which give one year ncd after nine months provided you take out another 9 month policy with them.Worth considering but ask them if other companies will recognize the ncd as i think you may have to insure with them for at least 3 nine month policies.
hope this helps0 -
Thanks for the info - Norwich union are looking at £1200 for a 1.0l micra - Not a happy bunny for a son at the moment0

If you find a driving instructor that is Pass Plus registered you can save as much as £800 on your insurance hope this helps0

I didn't pass my test until I was 20 for exactly this reason - I then went on to drive a 1.1 Rover Metro before getting a 1.4 Vauxhall Corsa which I have now. My insurance has just been renewed and cost me just £240. Admittedly it's gradually gone down as I'm now 24, well, on the 31st I will be
I feel that too many people around the 17 and 18 age want to get on the road, then when they do they regret the hit it makes on their pocket. Driving for some makes them realise what money really is. Especially when you fill up the tank - mine is over £30 from empty.
If I ever have children I'll be talking them out of driving until it really is a necessity.0 -
It is often possible to get free insurance with a new car.£2000 a year saved on insurance would help with the repayments. Depreciation will take place, obviously, but should be free of repair bills for a few years.
I am hoping to find something similar for scooters as my twins turn 16 soon.0
