I went through moneysupermarket to get a quote for my 26 yr old son, held his license for 8yrs, has 8 yrs no claim and it returned only five quotes ranging from £360 to £1,1061!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pathetic especially as Admiral, his current insurance company, have quoted £320 FC.

So I wouldn't even bother with moneysupermarket again >:(.

I found that elephant.co.uk was the best for me when I got my car (24, no no-claims-bonus). Try https://www.confused.com as this can search through many insurance companies for you (apart from some big names like DirectLine and Tesco).

£659 doesn't sound too bad for 2 learners for 10 months to me (expensive yes, but compared to many places?). Anyway, the 1.6 Rover is going to be expensive ... buy a What Car (or similar) and find a cheap, low insurance group car. Ford Ka is probably the lowest group I know of - anything 1.0 or 1.1 will be best.

Until recently we have always renewed with Elephant, as they were cheapest. My partner is the main driver (now 25) and I am the second name driver (also 25). Even 3 years ago when we were 22 elephant.co.uk was way cheaper than anywhere else.

However we have found this time around for both of our cars, that Admiral were slightly cheaper than elephant. Their website is identical to elephant's but with a different look and feel to it, and it seems that they undercut them. So as each of our cars came for renewal we went across to Admiral.

Incidentally, I sympathise with you. When we bought our 1st car, most wouldn't insure us at all, and the cheapest quote we got was for £1300. We were both 22, and although i had only just taken my test, my partner had been driving (not as a named driver) for 5 years unblemished. 2nd year the premium went down to about £900, then £700, so it soon comes down.

Like elephant, admiral also do a 10 month bonus accelerator policy, where you get 1 years' NCB after every 10 months.
  • Tried to insure my son, 23 next month, for 1973 Vdub camper - 0-60 sometime next week - a couple of years back. Virtually no-one would touch him at any price. One quoted approx £3.5K fully comp. £3.6K 3rd party!!!

BY the way - may be a new thread - a new scam for hiding costs of insurance. Got my renewal docs back from Norwich Union direct recently to notice that social domestic & pleasure specifically EXCLUDES going to and from work! Cost c£14 extra p.a.

Been driving 40+years and never come across that one before.
  • Addendum:

I should have said "wouldn't touch him until he was 23" - hence mention of his age.

For various reasons he will only just be taking his test when he can arrange one. We'll see what fanciful figures they come up with then.

Many companies ask whether you will be commuting or not, as people who do are higher risk (driving in busy traffic etc.) than those who just drive for leisure purposes. Doesn't surprise me that they have clarified that SD&P doesn't include this, if there are customers like yourself who expect it to be included.

    Hi,

I am currently learning to drive and will need to buy my own car. I thought I'd try and find out what cars reside in the lowest insurance group and buy one of those, but I can't seem to find out! Any idea's?

    Emma.
