I had 2 cc and a loan at 18 as i worked for TSB before Lloyds got their nasty mits on them. Im scared for my DS as I know what happens when you go to uni they still throw cc and overdrafts at you and I so dont want him having to start a career with thousands of debt.

You must know exactly how devious these banks can be having worked for them then!

Does your DS know your situation, hopefully that will make him think twice?

I think he has an idea we have debt as I have been very obvious about cutting back like we only had one holiday this year instead of the usual 3 (i love the sun).
I have spoken to him about trying to fund himself through uni and if he does we will cetainly help him, also about when he gets his first pay packet it will be all his. Recently I have been pointing out adverts like wonga and how it cons people into borrowing and as an A* maths student he understands and agrees.
BTW I left the bank 16 years ago as I hated the fact it changed to a shop and you got judged on how many product you could sell, it didnt work for me.

I hate those payday adverts, they make me so so angry.

Im sure your DS will have his head screwed on and you will be in excellent position to advise him!

Banks must be a horrible place to work now, they don't do what's best for the customer which must be hard if your someone with principles!

  • Just been reading about if your son knows about your debt. I've been quite open with my eldest 2, who are 13 and 12, they know how much the debt is, how I got into that mess and my aim to get rid of it. While I have opened myself up for a bit of abuse when they're having one of their 'moments' :(, overall they are quite positive. They are starting to help, by planning are weekly menus, suggesting what we can sell etc and dd no2 comes shopping with me and nags me when I pick up something not on the list (unless it's for her;)) MInd you they know when we finally get there, we'll have a big holiday and then start paying for their uni.....
Proud to be dealing with my debts,

£100 sent to Lloyds just hoping postie brings that cheque and then i may venture to the bank where i can pay all my £2 coins in.

I have made DS aware of the debt but not how much he is a terrible worrier and its not his worry, although he does tell me if we help him through uni he will give us whatever we want as soon as he is earning, nice house, nice cars and holidays. It's nice that at his age he is still a little innocent but hey im not saying no to any of the above.

you are doing very well with lloyds :T

i guess we all see it differently with our kids.... me & her indoors don't lose a wink of sleep.... we've just told him there's less money available for fancy holidays, etc., due to the recession, salary freezes, etc., ..... which is true anyway.... but how totally ironic is this.... we've reared DS to be very frugal with money.....

Well we both know Lloyds are not the best on calculations LOL. I have noticed that lots of people have very large overdrafts I thought ours at £2000 was a lot but probably isnt due to the two salaries going in each month.
More positive thinking for me going forward cant wait for a few huge cheques tomorrow well at least one from mm lots of bids on ebay making me more than i dreamed of and maybe winning something on one of the many competitions I have entered.
Hopefully this time next year our christmas planning will be slightly different

I had a £2k overdraft with Lloyds too! I cleared it recently, it was the first on the hit list I think :T
