Do not buy mac. This price is just apple as symbol. You can get more than better laptop for less money.
Only if you are really a fan of apple get it. They are really quality and have a great user interface but they are overpricedNot good behaviour for a Newbie

I'm not sure how flexible the apple hardware is when it comes to installing windows or linux, but I would not wish to buy an notebook and be restricted as to which operating system I run.
I know that the apple branded mobile phones seem to be pretty well locked down which does not add to my confidence in apple branded devices!0 -
Glad to see things haven't changed whilst I've been away.
Love the way macs are always better than PCs in hardware, software, etc, even in price this time. But then those same things don't matter when its pointed out they're not.
Seriously whats with all the drooling over that mac the keyboard and mouse look rubbish! And the screen don't look anything special chunky with a silver strip at the bottom that could have been utilised to enlarge the screen.
Anyway OP do your home work and find one that suits you best. Its pointless asking to mac or not to mac on this forum as you'll end up with an argument sorry discussion like this and be back where you started. Unless you wanted to see people duke it out again.0 -
that mac the keyboard and mouse look rubbish!.
Yes, but if you pay Apple a mere £56 you can upgrade to a mouse with a whole two buttons! :j
Just don't try to put two fingers on the mouse at the same time, it confuses the poor thing.

You must be looking at the wrong model, or lying again.
Here's the one I'm seeing on the Dell site:
As you can see the macbook has a very slightly faster processor (2.13 vs 2.26MHz - hard to notice without benchmarking) - your beloved frontside bus is the same. It also has an extra 4WHr on the battery. Other than that the macbook gets spanked by the XPS in a huge way:- Half the RAM (and maximum capacity of just 4GB in comparison to XPS's 8GB).
- Half the hard drive capacity, at creakingly slow 5400rpm
- Much slower graphics card, with half the RAM and much slower speed
- IMHO crappy looks in comparison to the sleek luxury Studio XPS, but that's a completely subjective issue
If you were to upgrade the macbook to try to get close to the XPS - you would need to pay £81 for the upgrade to 4GB RAM, another £123 for the hard drive upgrade to the 500GB 5400rpm provided free on the XPS - (there is no 7200rpm option for the macbook), taking the price well over £1,000. Then add another £21 for a DisplayPort to DVI dongle (that probably cost about 50p to make) if you want to be able to connect it to most external monitors, and another £21 for a DisplayPort to VGA dongle if you want to be able to use it with a projector. And yet this is despite still having much slower graphics (no upgrade available from Apple)
I'm not sure what I've done to be accused of "lying again", but here's the one I'm looking at:
The one you're linking to has a 320 GB HDD, not a 500 GB HDD:
(it's OK though, I won't call you a liar)
And it doesn't have an LED backlit display. The Mac also comes with a full version of Mac OS X (not Mac OS X Home Premium or some similar inanity), and it comes with iLife.
You're really appealing to the lowest common denominator. Is that it? a bigger hard drive? More RAM? Good grief. Next you'll be arguing a Fiat is better than a BMW because the Fiat has more cup holders.
The Mac has a much better display, a longer battery life, comes bundled with better software, and it's built better. Anyone who can compare those two laptops side-by-side and decree that the Mac is pointlessly over-priced needs their head examined.
Are you seriously telling me that the only thing the MacBook has going for it is the "slightly faster processor"?0 -

I'm sure your Bluetooth Mouse with laser tracking has much more sophisticated multi-touch capabilities, and was much more reasonably priced.0 -

The last gasps of a losing argument.
As I stated, it has the option of the 320GB 7200rpm drive, or the 500GB 5400rpm drive, both for the same price. Both easily outclass the 250Gb 5400rpm drive offered by Apple
I seem to recall writing a good deal more than that.
You're getting confused though. It can't have "half the hard drive capacity, at creakingly slow 5400rpm". The two states are mutually exclusive.
Anyhow, you seem to be of the opinion the hard drive speed and the amount of supplied RAM matters more than the display, battery life, software, and build quality.
I just disagree is all.
Nothing wrong with that is there?0 -

I am looking at upgrading my current acer laptop to a new one and was wondering what peoples views are on the Apple Macbook.
I need something with a fast processor and memory as I do alot of downloading and use alot of applications?
I'm not too bothered about the size of the harddrive as I have a 320gb external one although I do alot of streaming blu-ray films from my laptop to my PS3.
Are the Macbook applications user friendly as I am only used to using windows and internet explorer?
Thanks
It will be little hard to get used in mac if you are already using windows for the past years, but you will have lot of fun in mac if you get used to it.0
