I separated from my husband 3 years ago and I am single mum of 2 kids.. I am struggling to bay off my debts after the separation.. I think it is a good reason, isn't it?

It depends on what the debts are and how you are managing now.

I'm a single mum with 2 kids after my husband left me (11 years ago now) but managed - just- to keep my head above water. I called my bank to let them know about my separation at the time and they helped me sort things out.

Did you let the bank now as soon as you got into difficulty ?
  • Thank you very much all for your replies. i will have a closer look at my bank statments and then will decide what to do.

No I haven't.. I didn't know bank could help me with that. Thanks a lot I will inform them.
  • Hi, I have just been charged another £25 fee from the BOS for being less than £200 into my £900 arranged overdraft limit for less than a week.
This has happened before numerous times and I have never gone over my arranged overdraft limit. After the bank has taken off my charge I am now back into my overdraft again which will incur more charges. I am a recent graduate with no job (currently seeking), I am not on benefits, and I receive no income whatsoever therefore no way of getting out of my hardship. I applied to the bank of scotland 2 years ago for a student account which they refused (and I have been a loyal customer for around ten years)
I went into the bank today and requested only the charge transactions from the last 2 years. At first the lady proceeded to tell me that they couldn't go back that far but only in statements, which i agreed to receive, and I have not been charged for those (as of yet, and she did not state I would anyway)

Do these charges seem fair to anyone who deals with their current account, and do I have the right to claim them back?
Also am I eligible for a graduate account, even though they refused my student account 2 years previously?

Nb: I did give all the correct information and paperwork when I applied for a student account

    Thanks for any help :)

There's no point attempting to agrue if the fees are fair or not, not since the OFT lost a at the Supreme Court and even gave up themselves as no hope. No one here has reported any success since on that basis.

Also, no, you have no right to claim them back either.

    HI All,
Not sure if I am posting to correct thread, but I really need help with Santander for my Financial hardship claim.
I lost my job in March this year and am currently not working, I am really struggling to keep on top of everything and I recently tried to re-open a hardship case pending from back in 2009.
I used the template on here and sent this to Santander and got a letter back fobbing me off and basically telling me they are sorry for my hardship but nothings changed as the account is closed.
Has anybody had any success with such claims and how can I get round this, I have looked at going to the ombudsman now, but I just want to see if there is anything else I can try before this.
I provided them with all the proof, bank statements etc..
    Any help, greatly appreciated.

    Thanks:(

  • Probably about a year ago I was helping my daughter to make a claim for bank charges for her and her partners joint account. The claim was for an account they had maybe 5 years ago. They went over their overdraft limit and bank charges were added meaning the next month the same again and all this kept snowballing and they were getting deeper in debt. They found theirselves unable to pay things like council tax, were freezing because they could not afford heating and had to give up their rented accommodation and move in with relatives. Also her partner lost his job.
They sorted out a DMP because they took Pay day loans too at this time to survive. Also they changed banks and got a basic bank account and gradually started paying off their debts and her partner got a decent job and things are now much better. When we tried to reclaim charges they were turned down however , on reading the information on here I am sure they qualify on the hardship scale. They had payments returned more charges got added and there seemed no way out of the spiral of charges they were in. What I really want to know is can we retry this claim and how do we proceed if the refuse again. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice.

You can try, but I fear you will be wasting your time.

Is your daughter currently in genuine financial hardship?
(Check the sticky thread for more details - it doesn't sound like it if she is " paying off their debts and her partner got a decent job and things are now much better". Financial hardship is assessed on total household income and expenditure)

Banks will only usually refund at most about the last 6 months charges (and they have no obligation to even do that)

Banks will only usually refund charges on the persons main bank account (the one that their income gets regularly paid into)
