I was told it does take a week or two for the levels to build up sufficiently for it to work, so don't give up if it hasn't worked in the next few days
and watch out for that glowing skin!

Great thread to remind people to check! I just wanted to add something - I hope you don't mind.
I am in my twenties and although I do check my breasts I don't do it as often as I should. When I had my first baby I had a lot of problems breast feeding and gave up after a week. After giving up I thought I had mastistis but never talked to a doctor or anything just coped in silence and in pain. After 6 weeks I noticed a golf sized lump in one of my breasts - this really scared me as I am only an 'A' cup so it seemed huge! I had my 6 week check up with GP the day after and I mentioned it to her. She said it was an abscess and would need to be treated. I had antibiotics but it just got worst because I had left it too long. I had to see a breast consultant  He said it wasn't that big - he had seen worse  ...anyway to cut a long story short I had to have the gunk from the abscess syringed out with a needle guided by ultra sound - it was ok but not pleasent. All this was worse/more of a worry to me than child birth.
I just wanted to make woman aware that if they have any concerns about their breasts at any stage in their life/age please do not be embarrassed to go to a GP. If I had spoken to someone weeks before I would have had anyone at all looking or poking around with my boobs and it would have cleared up with a course of antibiotics.
The longer you leave it the more embarrassed you might become and more likely to have a worse outcome - go and see a GP straightaway what ever your story and whatever your age!
And breast feeding mums please seek help! I will be this time round!!SAHM Mummy tods (born Oct 2007) and dd (born June 2010)0 -

I had breast abcesses after my first baby too.
Both in my left breast.
I had antibiotic injections daily for a week and one came up in a huge blister which they emptied with a syringe however the next day I got very ill and a huge lump the size of an orange swelled up above my nipple. At the same time another huge lump came up in my armpit.
Long and the short of it was that I was rushed to hospital and had to have an operation to open my breast and have the abcess drained as I had septicemia.I was still on antibiotics at the time.
It took three months to heal the hole the abcess had caused as it had to be packed with clean dressings everyday, gradually reducing the packing to allow the tissue to grow and heal.
It was agony..
I'm pleased to say that as I was young it healed well and the scar is barely visible
I would second what you say about seeing the doctor first if they have any lumps,as although mostly they will be harmless my abcesses and blood poisoning developed literally over night.0 -
The only thing I would say about regular self-examination is to do it on a week day. I found a lump when in the shower on a saturday and had to worry about it all weekend until I could see my GP on monday. Luckily it was soon sorted out.

Just wondering if theres anything in the water- OP are you in London!! (have also heard random friends complain about this recently also).
I seem to get tender breasts just 2 weeks after my period ended and they remain tender and get worse until my period begins with mind blowing cramps. I don't doubt its hormonal but I'm wondering just how many hormones are in the water we drink- its already been said that large traces of the contraceptive pill are found in tap water (they clean water but cannot get rid of all the hormones apparently).

The hormone thing is a worry, they say there is hormones in the water, dairy produce and meat:eek:so lord knows how many additional hormones we have wondering about, I also read that young girls are starting their periods earlier because of the hormones in what we eat/drink:eek:Jennie, I was in London until 3 years ago and am now in Essex, it sounds to me like you have sore breasts around period and ovulation time, I know where your coming from hun, but if you know whats normal for your breasts you would be able to spot something unusual very soon so don't be worried because you can keep on top of things and remember a minimum of 80% of breast lumps are benign:)I guess the only way to stop the worry about the additional hormones is to go natural/grow your own which as we all know is easier said than done, thanks to everyone for keeping this post going, the more that see it the better:TThank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0 -
Thanks for the advice everyone, I bought some super strength Evening Primrose Oil today, 1050mg one a day from Boots, I've taken one already, hope it works soon:)Signature removed for peace of mind0

OK, further to my previous post, something my doctor knows about but isn't overly worried by, is that I had really, really sore nipples recently (perhaps coinciding with the cold spell? I do spend a lot of time out doors in the cold.) They were painfully ''erect'' and sore...the mos effective thing I could do was to have warm baths....is it possible that evening primrose oil would help with that if it recurs? (sorry glow girl, I realise this isn't anything like as dreadful as a lump, and my doctor was totally unconcerned, so I know its not a medical issue, just a painful one!)0
