Hi, I have tried this and also put a plate on the top and it came out the sides

Thanks for this tip, will stir regularly as usually leave it in there for 3.5 mins! Also will try the plate underneath tip

Summer I just thought of another thing. I do my oats on medium power for 5 minutes and they come out perfect. Maybe you could try this - doing it on a lower power. HTH.

    I've been Money Tipped!
For those who want/like to use honey in their porridge, Aldi sell small squeezy bottles of Orange or Acacia Honey for £1.29.

I like tesco value oats for breakfast and for flapjacks. I now make my porriage in a sausepan on the hob as in the microwave it just explodes. DH &DS have tescos instant oats mainly because they are to lazy to clean the mirowave. The instant oats are just like hoover dust!
  • I love eating porridge too , but I prefer buying it in bag (bulk if my budget permits) , not on sachets, and I put honey , instead of sugar for my sweetener:j.

I'm not a fan of those instant oaty things, they all seem to taste like some kind of paste-y pudding

I use medium oatmeal, it has a much better texture than oats that have been rolled in any way, & sometimes add a large pinch of pinhead for even more texture. I make it with water, a pinch of salt & eat it with cold milk

I can just imagine you all freaking out now at the thought of it :D

    Hi Summer

Have you tried using a large bowl to microwave them in? I had this problem using a smallish bowl. They do tend to rise up and bubble so need a large vessel.
    HTH

I got a large cream "le cruset" look-a-like bowl-jug in Tesco, its big enough, no mess over the top, but the handle gets red hot!

Anyone got the Le Cruset one? Does the handle get red hot in the microwave?

Anyway I've tried lots of oats, HATE the instant ones & the jumbo oats.

I like the plain old Quaker & Scotts, normal ones.

1 tiny cup of oats, 2 of skimmed milk, in the microwave, DONE:D

Sprinkle over "fake" suger & stir in a little skimmed milk.
  • I`m a big fan of the oat so simple range but i do agree that they are very expensive ive brought myself a big bag of the tesco value porridge oats (58p) & i`m going to give them a go i like a mashed up banana in mine i`m hoping its going to be nice :)

So last night we were having a conversation about whether there is a medium setting on our microwave :rotfl:Might have to get the manual out and have a read of it!

Okay I am going to stop buying oats so simple due to info on this thread about the amount of sugar etc in them.. I definately prefer the taste of the scots oats and will try the tesco value ones next time aswell.

For those who still are after oats so simple, Budgens has them at 1/2 price

I finally managed to make a bowl of non exploding oats :T . I micro'd for 1 min, left a few seconds, micro'd for another min, left for a few seconds, and so on - result :j

I like Scotts Oats, or any organic ones. Have been having porridge for years for breakfast or an evening warmer before hitting the sack.

My favourite way of cooking it is to warm up the pan, add the dry oats and get them a "little" toasty, then grate some nutmeg, about a pinch, and a tiny pinch of salt (makes a huge difference).
Then in goes warmed milk or half water and half milk. cook for less than 5mins on a low to medium heat.
Thats the basic and then since I always have very ripe bananas and dried berries, I mash half a banana in a bowl and add the porridge, no honey or sugar needed.

Honey is fine, but I have found something...better than that, as far as having a really low glycemic index, its called agave nectar (asda, tesco etc sell it), and its so sweet, just add a drop of that without feeling too guilty....yum!

I've found if I get Oats that are too "large" using a grinder very quickly helps speed up the cooking process.
