Porridge - Best for value and taste?

Hi all,
I've become addicted to Quaker Oats So Simple Original satchets, cook in 2 minutes. They are really good, I just micro them for the time stated.

Anyone else have any other brands which they find are just as good please?

Thanks in advance :)

This is so weird, I bought these yesterday and just finished my first one, it was nice and so easy. First time I have had porridge in years :)

  • Why not just buy a normal box of porridge or even cheaper a big bag. I cook it in a big pyrex bowl in the microwave, I use half water and milk and cook it for about 10 mins for three of us (obviously less for one portion). Kids love it with chocolate spread but I prefer syrup- Mmm it's like pudding for breakfast.

The sachets are really expensive for what they are - you can make quick porridge with any kind of oats, just add milk/water and microwave it. I have seem 'make your own' oats-so-simple recipes about online, they seem to involve blending the oats slightly and adding powdered milk etc so it might be worth looking out for them.

I have to say though that I do like the M&S quick porridge, which comes in a box with a scoop. I think it's got cream in it - either way it's yummy and would probably be a bit cheaper than the packets, although it's still a lot more expensive than plain oats.

I buy tesco value porridge oats, they're less than 50p a bag and just as nice as any other I've tried. I weigh out 40g, add half milk, half water (by eye) then micro for about 2 mins.

I do exactly the same thing :)

The Oat So Easy range is nice, my favourite is the golden syrup flavour, but it's just as easy making your own, and far, far cheaper

I use these tho with Golden syrup is my favourite flavour, I recently tried the raspberry but wasn't keen on that. My fella tried the Pawridge this week. He says its like ready brek and yuk so that can stay at his house!

We get a bag from tesco or co op for about 80p - lasts ages. I dont like the "posher" rolled ones from waitrose (or m and s) - which are still only about 90p as they go too mushy for me. I eat these every day because they are so low in calories but fill you up til lunchtime - helps my dieting.
  • I tried using Quaker oats the other day from the corner shop but the kids said they preferred the Tesco Value oats, they don't even like the Tesco scottish oats, it has to be the value ones. Fine by me!

Much to my annoyance, I've recently developed a vaguely pathetic Taste the Difference jumbo oats habit. They're still only about a quid for a big bagful, and I find them so much tastier and more filling than the crushed/instant oat stuff you get in sachets. They've got more texture as well, being whole oats. I do it on the stove with unsweetened soya milk and honey and it only takes two minutes longer than microwaving it.

And now I'm craving a bowl of it again. :(

When I tried to make my own I used just semi skimmed milk, no water. Will this make a huge difference in the way they turn out? I make the packet ones in the same way - just milk.

I will try the other ones, I sometimes don't have much luck with porridge, it can come out quite odd hence I tried the packet ones but willing to give it another go..
