I love the Asda smartprice porridge oats, last time i bought them they were 58p for a large bag (poss 1kg)

They take a couple of mins in the microwave made up with half milk and half water and are really yummy :D

Also good for making twinks hobnobs!

Okay I am going to stop buying oats so simple due to info on this thread about the amount of sugar etc in them.. I definately prefer the taste of the scots oats and will try the tesco value ones next time aswell.

For those who still are after oats so simple, Budgens has them at 1/2 price

I finally managed to make a bowl of non exploding oats :T . I micro'd for 1 min, left a few seconds, micro'd for another min, left for a few seconds, and so on - result :j

Oats-so-simple have a non sugar version if its the texture you like, think they are 2 for £3 in Tescos and Waitrose at the moment too.

Flavagens (or something like that) are another good microwave brand, if you look in the ingredents and see soya anywhere, its added to stop the porridge over flowing so should at least help. It basicly "glues" the porridge together whilst it cooks so it takes more of an effort for it to crawl over the edge, doesn't always stop it but can prevent it.

Having said that, I use the Dorsets stuff and it has no soya, (no added sugar either, just plain or with dried fruit) yet it doesn't crawl over the edge.

I'm confused now, as I read this post below and panicked and have sent the box to recycling heaven so couldn't check it.

Is it certain types that must have lots of sugar in then? If that's the case I might stick to Oats at work at least, as it's much easier than to faff around with the 4 minute regular ones

Oatso are, to be blunt, utter crap - overpriced and very bad for you. If you look on the ingredients list you'll find the second item listed is sugar which means that, after oats, it's the next biggest ingredient. Also, as the oats are so refined they've pretty much lost any of their slow-energy release qualities.

Yes, the original are the non sugar, all the others have sugar in (and OMG do they!) its better off getting the original and if you must have sugar, adding it yourself, your probably unlikely to add as much as they do!

jenniewb, thanks so much for clarifying this - makes such a difference as the original ones are the ones that I like.

I do prefer buying the boxes and doing it myself now after reading this thread but for work sometimes it's just easier as they only take 2 minutes and you know you're not going to create an explosion that others probably won't thank you for as some porridge oats take 4 minutes to micro.

I do agree the proper oats have a much nicer texture and aren't as flakey but it's the convenience and if I'm eating porridge, then I'm not tempted to nip into Pret for a pastry/crossaint

I was so shocked when I got the golden syrup by mistake, I could almost smell the sugar on the packet and when you tipped it into a bowl it was so sweet and tasted just full of sugar. Never again do I want to make that mistake, could barely stomach eating one bowl of it, and then gave the rest of the huge box to someone who has a sweet tooth..
