If you look on the ingredients list you'll find the second item listed is sugar which means that, after oats, it's the next biggest ingredient. Also, as the oats are so refined they've pretty much lost any of their slow-energy release qualities.
They sell on the convenience - the 2 minutes in a micro. Normal oats also take 2 minutes on high in a micro.
I use jumbo rolled oats, half water/half milk. I eat with a teaspoon of honey and sometimes put on sliced banana or berries.
Thank you for pointing this out, I have never actually looked at the contents
I have been finding them useful since I first purchased not long back as they are easy to eat at work. The packet means I can tip the oats out and fill the packet with the milk to the line they provide as I don't have measuring facilities at work. However I might be better off taking some regular oats from home each day already preweighed and guessing the milk.

(except watching to make sure it didn't explode... which it nearly did!). It came out really well!/QUOTE]
How do you prevent it exploding? The two minute satchets ones are ok but when I make the 4 minute scottish oats which I weight out myself what a mess in the microwave...
Hi Summer
Have you tried using a large bowl to microwave them in? I had this problem using a smallish bowl. They do tend to rise up and bubble so need a large vessel.

That would be my downfall. I buy Oats so Simple because its portion controlled....for some reason opening another sachet is a no no but I can imagine finding it a bit too easy to add some extra oats and milk if I was measuring it myself.
My willpower is LOW!
Has anyone tried the sweet cinnamon oss? I got some today and am very much looking forward to trying it in the morning!
The cinnamon oss is absoluty lovely really tasty0 -

Stir every 1 minute, stops it over flowing. The reason oats-so-simple don't do this is they put an additive in which prevents them from over flowing. But I have used other brands and gotten away with it either by putting a plate under the bowl- think more in the microwave means less concentrated waves on just the bowl and the oats cook just the same. Failing that stirring half way works just fine.0 -

Hi, I have tried this and also put a plate on the top and it came out the sides

Thanks for this tip, will stir regularly as usually leave it in there for 3.5 mins! Also will try the plate underneath tipThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Dorset cereals do a lovely apple & raisin one, they also do other flavours and plain ones. I get the 2 minute microwave ones (lazy I know!) but you can get a big box which you weigh out yourself.
Not sure which supermarkets do them but I buy mine direct from Dorset cereals online as I had trouble getting the low fat flakes from my local ones.
They do have a minium order value(I think it's £11.50) but postage which is next working day delivery is included in the price and I don't find them anymore expensive than when I buy them from Sainsbury's online.
Also the sainsbury's own golden syrup oats are as good if not better than the oats so simple and cheaper.

I buy the Tesco oats pictured above or the Asda Scotttish oats which are priced similar & nice, a bag can last us weeks for 44p!.
I make it with half water half milk.
I put honey on the top of mine & stir a little bit it in my 4yr olds when making it so he CAN'T see me do it (says he doesn't like honey because he's tried it on toast!) but i've put in in his porridge for years i started doing it when he was a baby to get him to eat it knowing how bland it is plain, & he's loved it ever since but doesn't know & i put honey in it & i know he'd refuse to eat it if he saw me do it, he tells everyone he has it plain, little does he know!;).
P.s Will have to confess as he gets older & sleeps over at friends etc or he'll wonder why no porridge tastes as nice as Mummys!ha!0 -
Thanks for the link to the hobnob recipe, that's fantastic - I don't look on this forum normally but will start to take a look.
Do most of the hobnob bakers recommend a certain brand of porridge? I will read through the thread but it's a very long one
I think a lot just use the value range or basics at Sainsburys but I didn't want to try the basic stuff in case it put me off. They are brill with the one that I use.0 -

My preference is Sainsburys Whole Rolled Oats, sometimes they are about 80p a bag, other times they have been as much as £1.20 so I stock up when they are cheaper. I like the bigger oats in the biscuit rather than the smaller ones but that is just my preference.0 -
Apparently oats are extremely good for lowering cholesterol. Some days when I have little time for lunch, I eat another bowl. They definitely keep you much more full than other cereals. So cheap too.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01
