Right, it's going to cost me about £250 to get to where I need to be for the interview. And I need to negotiate my way between three towns and then back to the airport, which I haven't costed...
I haven't booked it yet.
I've been trying to work out long term costings - which is difficult when you are not sure of the cost of living or where you'd be living if you were there...
I roughly kept the costs of utilities the same as I'd be looking for a similar sized place. But I also have to allow for a shortfall in my mortgage here if I can only rent out at the lowest price. At the minute that could be as low as a shortfall of £20-30 a month. But, that's on SVR and when the Bank of England base rate goes up, that shortfall could rise considerably. And if it were to rise to the level of my previous fixed rate (and the level I currently overpay) then it would be £135 per month.
I could probably get a decent bank loan for a decent car at £250ish a month. But, if I'd have to buy myself out of my current lease car. Being on fleet insurance means I have no no claims and after having had my bump winter past, then to insure my current car fully comp (needed for the job) it's over £2k. That's a monthly total on par with my current total for all my car costs which currently comes off my salary at source.
Rental down there is, on average, on par with my current mortgage payment. I could pay an average of £60 more or less depending on where I stay and whether I want one or two rooms. If I stay in the less expensive areas, the cost and time of travel back up to Scotland will be greater and my travel costs within the area to see the people I do know in and around the area will be greater. If I only have one room, it won't be as easy to have family and friends visit from Scotland.
  :wall:   :wall: I really don't know what to think right now!
I do know that yesterday I was very excited because I received a text message from my lodger saying could we work something out if he had to move out on Friday. Obviously I was cool and nonchalant as I said I'm sure we could work something out. I wonder if my disappointment was evident when I came home to find out that he didn't take the flat as he thought they were trying to scam him because he would have been jointly liaible for the rent of those he'd have moved in with whom he didn't know.
So, in summary:- I need my own space
- I'm terrified that the financial risks are just too great for something that I think, in my heart of hearts, would probably be a short term move for me
- especially when I'm so close to being debt free
- I'm terrified I'm just talking myself out of it
- I need at least 5k over the starting salary for the banding to make it anywhere near viable. Closer to 6.5k!!!! to feel secure. I have no idea if that's feasible in the public sector!!! Probably not. Nevermind knowing I don't have a scooby how you negotiate such a thing, having always worked in the public sector! And always being too politely British about these things anyway!
I don't know that I like playing at being a grown up! Pah.Jan10: 28,315.81 Jan11: 18,015.32 Jan12: 7,682.58 Jan13: 2,987.73 Current debt: 1,225.55

Ok, I don't know if it helps but while I'm still at easyJet (and probably beyond) I can put you on staff travel so you can travel from Luton/Stansted to Glasgow for around £30 each way. If it's near Chelmsford or Liverpool Street where the job is, then we will have a spare room for rent for a reasonable cost.
Sorry if I've confused you more... just showing you alternatives

Yes you are doing a good job of talking yourself out of it. Although I do have some sympathy. If I get an interview for the job I've just applied for I need to get myself down to a town and then 10 miles out on a bus.
Right. Lets take a step back.
1. You are currently in a job and have paid off about £21k of debt in a phenomenal time.
2. Your employer is NOW taking your request for a change in your working life seriously so things should improve on that front.
3. The fact that you have paid off an enormous amount of debt DOES NOT mean you have to be debt free next week.
Do you want this job? Do you want to go for an interview?
IF you decide you do then go for it. They extended the closing date for you. As far as I can see this is fairly close to being head hunted.
Work the finances out.
See if they offer you the job.
Negotiate for the amount of money you need.
If you decide for ANY reason you don't want to take the job, you still have your flat, your job and your space AND a small debt.

The other thing to say in terms of accommodation. Where I am going they have a custodian scheme where I can rent part of a school or stately home for about £180 / £200 a month. It's not where I'd want to live for a number of years but a good 50% cheaper than even a house share.

Butti is talking definite sense. Re negotiation on the salary, if they want you that much they will pay it, and if not you can stay where you are and they can work on changing things for you.Became Mrs Scotland 16.01.16

If any-one needs advice, ask Butti. She talks sense!
In answer to your questions Butti, I no longer know. And it freaks me out when I don't know what my intuition is saying any more. (Now I understand why my ex looked at me in such confusion one day when I asked (through gritted teeth) why he didn't listen to his intuition. He didn't know what I meant. It makes most of my decisions for me so I thought he was just mental. Which he is but that's another story. :rotfl:)Jan10: 28,315.81 Jan11: 18,015.32 Jan12: 7,682.58 Jan13: 2,987.73 Current debt: 1,225.55

Flights booked.
Butterflies going nineteen to the dozen.
Trying to remember how to breath.
Tomorrow I have a training day on palliative care which will slap me right down to earth and make me realise I am stressing about the small things.
Maybe time for one of these:
Fear cannot be banished, but it can be calm and without panic; it can be mitigated by reason and evaluation.
Vannevar Bush
Unless perhaps you overthink...
maybe this one then:
Doubt is an uneasy and dissatisfied state from which we struggle to free ourselves and pass into the state of belief; while the latter is a calm and satisfactory state which we do not wish to avoid, or to change to a belief in anything else. Charles Sanders Peirce

This is also fine
I think you have summed up the situation as it stands perfectly.
You are going to go, you are going to reason and evaluate.

At least if I spontaneously combust some-one else will need to clean up!
I found my little black book in which I was at some point writing down "amusing" anecdotes and things that I might like to write about (probably during a really brief phase where I wanted to be a writer :rotfl:. You should know I don't read back over my diary because I don't want to have to realise just how flighty I can be!)
I had written about a drunk man at a festival that told us to "let your face smile if it wants to".Which made my face smile because it wanted to.
I have spoken to my friend with whom I will be staying at the weekend. It is her intention to persuade me to move!
Anyhoo, I came on to check my totals as it's that time of the month... off to check, will be back to update shortly...Jan10: 28,315.81 Jan11: 18,015.32 Jan12: 7,682.58 Jan13: 2,987.73 Current debt: 1,225.55
