How much does that make it worth spending on a renewable power system?

On solar thermal: EST estimate you can save £50 on gas, which I calculate means they expect it to produce 1500kWh. At 18p/kWh thats £270 for the FIT. They say a system costs £3000-£5000 which would be give 6.5%-10.5% annual return.

They say a 2kWp solar PV system costs £8000-£14000 and I see a few guesstimates on the web that it would produce 1500kWh per year. So that's £615pa for the FIT and £140 savings on your inputs. Equivalent to annual return of 5.5%-9.5%.

I may be missing something, but if running costs for a ground source heat pump are £650 per year (EST), and the feed in tariff is £1000 per year (DECC), it makes sense to turn the heating up to maximum and burn as much electricity as possible!?

It on iplayer on working lunch today, one lady says rate of return is around 5-8% rate of return

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00qnx4b/Working_Lunch_01_02_2010/

    starts around 1.40
  • Re returns,

He also said the FITs would still only offer 5-8% return on investment, unchanged from last summer's proposals and well below Germany's typical level of 10%. But documents from his energy and climate change department show that the inflation-linking of tariffs will push nominal (not inflation-adjusted) returns up to 7-10%.

It said on working lunch that the £400 annual payment will be paid for my customers of energy suppliers

According to EST typical solar panel may costs around £8k-12k, even on lowest price its going to take 15+ years for payback allowing for a small increase in rates
  • £8-12k will get you a whole church roof full of solar panels
    40 x 185wp about 7kwp or 52 metres square metres for under £12k
    mcs certified pv panels
for grants and fit feed in tarrifs
    just shop around
and will offer payback of about 8years or less

    Where from?

They have to be installed by an accredited installer and the going rate is around £5.5k to £6.5k per kW. So your 7kW will cost between £35,000 and £45,000.

In any case you only get the high rate of FIT for < 4kWp.
  • I'm in the process of applying for grant/funding to install PV solar panels. I am on a fixed online 'normal' dual tariff at the moment with Scottish Power but I cannot find any useful hard detailed information about suppliers in West Yorkshire and feed-in tariffs which would apply to me. Can anyone direct me to a source of this information? My installer is coming next week to do an installation survey but I'd like to research this myself in addition to getting his ideas.
