  • I have found the following from DVLA I will have to supply one of the following:
    - a receipt of purchase on headed paper from a garage confirming engine number, engine size and fuel type for the replacement engine
    - an inspection report from an organisation such as the AA or RAC
    - an inspection report provided for insurance purposes or
    - written confirmation from the engine manufacturer showing engine number and size

Is the engine number correct on the V5C = NO if the engine has been changed and they have not informed the DVLA of the change.

    That can cause insurance issues.

Failure to notify them could potentially see your insurance fail to payout if they find the engine number belongs to a stolen vehicle.

They may assume your vehicle is the stolen one on false ID tags.

Be a long time before you get a payout.

  • Hi everybody some advice please if anyone can help.

Have seen a Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI 08 Plate at Arnold Clark, only done 27,000 miles, it's at an Arnold Clarke branch 100 miles from me. Rang up the salesman to get him to send me some pictures, he sends me pics but informs me that the car is in the garage as the timing belt snapped on the way into the garage, will be a fortnight before it's fixed.

He's sent me a pic of the logbook with the full service history.

Yesterday I did an HPI check with the AA, no problems with the car. I haven't however added the VIN, mileage and V5 serial number and issue date to the HPI check. Sent the salesman an email asking for the above details and he seems a bit reluctant to give me those details. Have paid £200 deposit on the car. He added that Arnold Clark do a full HPI check on all their cars.

Was thinking that when the car was ready, would get the details, leave the garage for an hour and add the details to the HPI check and if it came out okay buy the car, if not go back to garage with the details and demand a refund. Thoughts anybody please !!

In these circumstances, does anything else not alarm you? Have you done your research on the 1.6 diesel Focus?

  • Hi, I've done the HPI check with the AA which comes back ok, the salesman has told me he's off today so I'm hoping he's going to send me the VIN, V5 serial number and issue date tomorrow, thus I'll have the full HPI check. He's sent me a photo of the logbook with the service history.

Is there anywhere else I can check anything without the VIN, V5 serial number and issue date ??

Pop the reg number in there and it will tell you the VIN number.

It doesnt work for all cars though. You need the VIN number for some. The reg number on my car wont work. But the VIN does.

    OK newbie, out of:
-Arnold Clark garage 100 miles away
    -Focus 1.6 TDCI
-Focus 1.6 TDCI that's snapped its TB at alleged low mileage
-Arnold Clark garage 100 miles away selling Focus 1.6 TDCI that's snapped its TB at alleged low mileage, being fixed by AC
Is not putting you off and your still spending money on an HPI check?

Hi, the garage being 100 miles away isn't putting me off at all, nor is the fact that the timing belt snapped, the car is 6 years old so the timing belt snapping is not unusual. I phoned my garage to ask their opinion and they basically said it's getting a new timing belt and other engine parts fitted by Ford technicians so nothing to cause concern. I'm going to check the DVLA MOT certificate database to check the mileage. Thanks forgotmyname got the VIN number !!

    Hi
Is there anybody on forum who possibly works for garage and can run HPI check for me pretty please?
I'm looking to buy Kia Rio from private seller and would like to run check.
The latest MOT on car has advisory note: "Passenger airbag switch to off."
No idea what that could mean, so would like to know if car has been in accident and maybe the air bag was activated?

Now the car in on personalized number plates : N1 GLF
but the original plates are WG10 KGJ which will be put back on when /if I buy it.
What plates should be run through HPI check?

Many thanks in advance for any help.
